"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 24, 1998 - 21 i -------------------------- SPORTS Modack's season comes to a close From Page 19 strong season for the Merchants, and is a co- winner of the League's MVP award. Van Schagen had a great chance to put things away for Port in the first overtime period -- alone in front of the Merchant cage, he put a back-hand into the pads of Steve Thomas. Just over 28 minutes of OT had elapsed when Darrach scored the winner to give his team the 3-0 choke-hold on the series. FINAL SLAPSHOTS: wins over Georgina the final weekend of the sched- ule to get to the post-sea- son dance floor. And then they putin less than stellar efforts in losing the first two games of the Merchant series before bouncing back with determination in the final two that were decided in overtime. For much of the year, they got superb netmind- ing from Jeff Mackie who faced a truck-load of rub- ber in most games, and they had the League's top scorer in Adam Bonneveld him out of two games. As the head coach said "it was an up-and-down season." Menzies also told The Star after Friday's tough loss he's not sure at this time whether he'll return to the bench for another campaign. That decision will be made in a couple of weeks. Certainly the Modacks can take a measure of pride for the way they went out in the final two games of the series. This was good hockey, played with inten- sity on both sides. A bounce or two in the Modack's favour and the series could well have been tied after Friday night. But then the "hockey gods" didn't send many bounces their way right from the start. Junior C awards While the ModJacks came up short this winter in team success, Port Perry forward Adam Bonneveld capped off an excellent personal year by capturing the league's scoring championship. In his rookie year with the green and white, the Walkerton native grabbed the Eleanor Gilliam Memorial Trophy. The Merchant's Tim Teel, along with Uxbridge's John Liriano both took home the Irve Downey Memorial Trophy as the League's MVPs. The top rookie in the Central League was the Bruins' Drew Roberts. JD FISHING & ARCHERY with 79 points on 33 goals and 46 assists. He saw only limited action in the final match of the series due to a shoulder injury that kept This was indeed a strange and bewildering season for the ModJacks and their fans. To put it bluntly, some games they looked unstop- pable and other games they looked.......... well, fill in your own adjective here. & They lost ten games by CROSSWORD a single goal in the regular season (and the two in ANSWERS per week for largest fish by length playoffs) and lost a couple more by two goals and endured a horrendous nine game losing streak which surely had to play havoc with individual and team confidence. Their playoff hopes hanging by a thread in the final week, they came up with terrific back-to-back LIH[A|R > 00 =>» |0 Z([O|Z|>» w(»| mn (OH (>»|r DMZ|(Z|- £m ~|O|O <|D|- -|=(&|m T|O|Z DM[(--=(D|>|O mZ(O|lw oimim|n osents 1998 Pickerel ICE FISHING DERBY January 1 to February 28" = 1 Prize $200 20d Prize $1001 Gd Prize ST =| »| OI» Ori» ® "(>On »|=|-|m or |m|x >» 0|r pr >| |m ~"~|Zm|r Ii»|(H|C Z|O(O]=- miZim|2 w|i+|0n(0 E S Cc A P E S Q|Z|=|0O|>»|D|~ lin - >>» mi=|=|O 0|Ii< "im|>» Zin <(r|ln oimi--|>»|x mir|--|2 D|--=|~|n mi>»|0 vom ---|>»|~|O|>» mi<|=|>»|Z Dmim|Z|wn DURHAM COUNSELLING SERVICES YY) Suzanne Doupe Psychotherapist Support Counselling & Psychotherapy Services include y * Trauma Recovery e Family Difficulties NO EA .
