"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 3, 1998 - 9 Durham Regional Crime Stoppers recruits high school students PPHS teens join fight to reduce crime By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Durham Regional Crime Stoppers Unit recruited 60 more pairs of eyes last week to help them reduce crime in Durham Region. For a third year now the region's Crime Stoppers' Unit has reached out to area high schools in an effort to get an inside edge on crimes in and around the sec- ondary schools. And, according to Crime Stoppers' Police Co-ordinator Sgt. Kevin Slaney, it's working. "This is a fantastic program; it allows the students to take ownership of the school, the area and the administrative part of the program," he said Friday morning, one day after 60 students across the region were sworn in and given cer- tificates of recognition in Oshawa. Each of the 19 schools par- ticipating in the program in the region have students sitting on individual Student Crime Stoppers' Board of Directors. Once a Board is formed at a school, says Sgt. Slaney, the object is to promote Crime Stoppers and help reduce the number of crimes in that particular area. "Once the high school is on-line then everyone's a stakeholder in the project: Teachers, students, and parent councils. The students are encouraged to become student board members whd's function is to market the program in the school, pro- (A) em Slaw S Crime Stoppers works as a deterrent to reduce crime file crimes in and around the school, attend regular meetings and help raise money to pay off tipsters," he said, adding that they do not play a part in the inves- tigation or any arrest of any suspicious parties. And, while there are five high schools in Durham who have not joined the pro- gram, Sgt. Slaney explains that being part of Crime Stoppers is something that the school wants to be part of. "The high schools must want to be part of the program; Crime Stoppers does not do a sales job on them to get them to join. They must want it. The onus is on the school to approach us and say that they want to be part of it. Once they come to us then we will work with them to install the program in the school. "This allows the students in the school to be involved in something positive and proactive. This project is a partnership between Crime Stoppers, the three boards of educa- tion -- Durham District, Durham Separate and the English-speaking board of District #14 (Peterborough/Northumber- land) -- the police and the media. The project started off as a pilot in March 1995 when Ajax High School and Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic High School arranged for their own Student's Crime Stoppers' Board. In May of 1996 Bowmanville High School, Uxbridge Secondary School, O'Neill Collegiate, and Pickering High School opted to join the program. In January of 1997 six more high schools including Brock High School, Dunbarton High Congratulations to WENDYS|TIM HORTONS Whitby Toll Free 1-888-608-0690 "Proud to have been ANAT EE) BYTE construction and progress of Wendy's NETH RITES ! John Reed, PPHS's teacher laison for the program, says the six local members are eager to help out their community. "It works well as a deterrent against crime. We just make sure that people are aware of the Crime Stoppers' (phone) number and profile a crime when there 1s one," he said, pointing out that there was six members as well last year in the program's inaugural year at PPHS. "So far we haven't been called to action here and that is gopd news.
