"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 3, 1998 - 1 Central Seven endorses sex ed program By Rik Davie Port Perry Star The board of Directors of the Port Perry based, Central Seven for Community Living is showing its support for the Durham Board of Education's sex education program for developmen- tally delayed adolescents. The program directed towards the 80 or so ado- lescents in the boards associated classes has come under fire from the Family Action Council, a right wing fundamentalist group that accuses the programs supporters of promoting the homosexual life-style in Durham schools. Parents of students who are now or may in the future, receive the Manchester 'Lifefacts' section of the Life Skills program are fighting mad, and said so in a letter to Durham School Board Chairperson, Ruth Ann Schecdlich. Central Seven, which has operated as an helping hand for mentally delayed persons in the area so they can live more indepen- dently and learn skills necessary for them to con- tribute to their communi- ty, backs the Durham Boards use of the Lifefacts learning package as of importance for the stu- dents it is designed to help. In the letter board members sight the use of explicit pencil sketches to show intercourse and sex- ual abuse, among other topics as being in line with the type of learning strate- KEN EDWARDS 0'M1 AUTO 05.965. 7717 SERVICE FREE ESTIMATES * Specializing in computerized alignment & wheel balancing yy. * Electronic Engine Analysis * Domestic fuel injection services * Air conditioning * Cooling systems * Brake service * Steering General repairs to most makes of cars & light trucks NORM'S FIX-IT 1223 KING ST. Material used to teach people with developmental challenges must bee geared to their learning styles and cognitive abili- ties, and often the visual and the concrete are the most effective." The letter goes on to say that, while not all peo- ple may be comfortable with the teaching method, the board of Central Seven 1s more than assured that those who need to be com- fortable with it are. "Each student has an individual education plan that is collaboratively developed by parents and school officials. The plan identifies the students educational needs..... fur- thermore, no student par- ticipates in the Lifefacts Sexuality Program before his or her parents are encouraged to review the package, or before they provide their signed con- sent." Family Action Council spokesperson said they too intend to be on hand at the standing committee meeting Monday night, to make their voices heard. The newest player in the sex-ed controversy, Reverend Kenneth Campbell and his group Renaissance Canada Inc. issued a copy of a letter the group sent to media, the education minister, ITH ATR ELUTE Ee see what we've got in store be Dave Johnson as Campbell said in the release "interested others. Campbell said in the letter that they will have copies of the letter to the minister to distribute at to the public. Campbell called the Durham School board "dirty minded moral morons" and said the board was teaching it to "unsuspecting concesious- ness of youths with a 5 or 6-year-old mental maturi- ty." Campbell stated in the letter that "Those respon- sible for pushing such degenerency into the minds of the immature in the public school class- room ought to be arrested and charged with corrupt- ing the morals of minors!" Glenn Taylor, Executive Director of Central Seven said that Campbell was "stereotyping the dis- abled." "There are different lev- els of disability and ability in these young people, just as with the rest of us. His (Campbell) comments demonstrate his overall lack of understanding of a very complex issue." As for the comments made in the letter signed by Campbell, that referred to "moral morons".... Taylor replied flatly "it is obvious that Mr. Campbell and I share none of the same assumptions on this issue. Any other comment on my part would be an emotional one and quite inappropriate to such an important issue."
