Call for information 985-1296 Scugog seniors just keep getting younger By Stan Rickard It activity and enthusiasm 1s svnonymous with vouth then the Port Perry Seniors must be growing younger Over the last tew years the activities and programs for seniors at the Latcham Centre have grown to accommodate varied interests and the mem- bership has increased to over 200 people. Any senior, in Scugog Township, who has reached the age of "507 1s wel- come to join this Golden Age Group. New ideas and inter- ests, from new members, help to keep the organization vibrant and interesting. An executive body of 11 peo- ple meet once a month to plan, promote and coordinate pro- grams and also to look after many detailed items of busi- ness. On the second Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. there 1s a general meeting of the members to deal with business and have guest speakers. On the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5 p.m. there 1s a pot luck supper and special programs are arranged. The pot luck supper on Feb. 25 was another special occasion which had as its theme "Heart Month" with a "Get Acquainted" emphasis. Following an enjoyable supper everyone joined in a sing-song, with Lillian Harper as pianist, to sing songs of the "Heart." A "Getting To Know You" dialogue was then presented. For this presentation Isobel Burrell, Muriel Rickard and Don Zoller formed a panel to conduct interviews. The club became much better acquaint- ed with the following members as they responded to questions from the panel: Cam and Gwen Crawford, Harold and Evelyn Dennis, Enci Dhanoosingh, Stan and Ruth Foster, Lillian Harper, Jean McDermott, Wilmot Phair and Donald Putsey. This dialogue showed that there 1s a wealth of talent and a lifetime of Canadian heritage available from our seniors. The supper tables and food were tastefully set up by the February Food Services Committee of Leah Burgess, Bill Gaston, Helen Pascoe. Fern Redshaw, Muriel Selby, Joyce Ward and Alice Woodcock. To complete the evening, the piano students from the Studio of Paula Copithorn, A MUS. RM.T. entertained everyone with their artistic and skilled technique on the piano keyboard. They have just completed several suc- cessful performances from the Sunderland Lions Music Festival. These young musi- cians were: Mark Copithorn, Robert Bark, Joseph Kozlinsky, Celine Batterink, Darryl Copithorn, Laura Batterink and Ashley Faux. The wood carving group meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. under the direction of Dean Beatty. There are now 35 members who come from many places in and around Port Perry. Four women are included in the group and any- one who wants to learn is invit- ed to try it. Carved objects include horses, other animals, fish, birds and historical human characters. A plan for an exhibition is being worked out and details will be announced later. The seniors choir of about 24 people meet every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. The choir representative 1s Muriel Rickard and pramst leader 1s Carol Edgar. A variety of music 1s used and any senior who would like to sing with them will be given a warm welcome. The choir often entertains at meetings and at various func- tions in the area. Exercise and line dancing 1s held every Monday and Friday morning with Myrtle Bentley as the coordinator. There are about 20 members which includes three men. The present schedule will wind up on May 25 with a luncheon. The shuffleboard program 1s a mixed group of 45 members who meet every Monday after- noon. The leaders are Wayne and Isobel Burrell. The present schedule will end on May 25 with a banquet to follow on May 29 at the Blue Heron. Scores are kept and awards are given to the three people with the highest scores. An extensive seniors travel program is directed by Jackie Kerr of Kerr Bus Lines. For 1998 there have been 63 tours and trips arranged. Seniors who attend the regular meet- ings are brought up to date and have the opportunity to inquire about details and to register early for any part of this travel program. The executive negotiated a plan with the Ministry of Transportation whereby seniors may have their motor licence examinations in the senior's room at Port Perry. Twice a month a Ministry offi- cial comes to Port Perry to con- duct these tests. A senior who has a good driving record will not usually be asked to have an "in car" driving test but every two years must satisfac- torily complete a vision test, a written test and attend a 90 minute seminar related to driv- ing. The Euchre Club meets on a regular basis under the direc- tion of Grant Bright and Clara Warren. Times of meetings and other details can be obtained from them. A Quilting Group and Craft Group meet every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings under the leadership of Marion Lee. The quilting group, of 12 peo- ple, 1s working on two queen size quilts for which tickets are being sold. The draw for both of these quilts will be at the Seniors Annual Bazaar on Oct. 17. In previous years this group has raised a considerable amount of money for charitable purposes. This year they are planning to contribute the pro- ceeds to the Community Memorial Hospital Memorial Garden Fund. Future pot luck suppers have themes as follows: March an Irish theme, April is an Easter surprise with details to be announced later, May will have a "Western" theme and June will conclude the program year.
