10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 10, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Senator calls for sweeping reform From page 1 the 60-year-old, who spent much of his working life in investment banking management. He doesn't like the way senators are currently appointed by the sitting Prime Minister. "There's too much party politics in it," he contends. "The days when the Prime Minister phones senators at night to find out how they intend to vote on a matter should be gone. Our only allegiance should be to the people." He made several points on the changes that must, and must not, be made to Canada's upper house. "As it stands now, we have job security to age 75. Who else has that kind of job security? I'll tell you who: no one. And I'm not sure anyone should." And Senator DiNino dismisses the idea of an elected Senate outright. "If you must have an elected Senate, abolish it," he argued. "And if you don't reform it, abolish it." And he warned Senate reform is no quick fix: "I'm 60," he said. "If we start right now... I'll be dead before it's com- pleted. But make no mistake, it must be done." Police investigating home invasion on Island From page 1 anything. The childrens' parents, who were out of town at the time, were called and returned home. Durham Police were also called. Owners of the home told police the intruders may have been looking for some- thing left behind by a for- mer tenant who was evict- ed from the home. Suspects have been described as young white males between the ages of 16 and 17. The first intrud- er was wearing black wind- breaker pants with a zipper at the bottom, a grey sweat- shirt, and dark tight fitting gloves. Another was described as wearing a green and black plaid "lumberjack" type coat and was carrying the firearm, say police.
