| "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 10, 1998 Pe SPORTS % Cashway midgets edge Uxbridge 6-4 for their first playoff win of the year In the first playoff game for the Cashway Lumber Midgets, they handed Uxbridge the defeat as they came out on top by a score of 6-4. Joel Van Camp was clearly the dominant player in this contest as he pro- vided a hat trick and one assist and he also opened the scoring in this game with a backhand that just got over the line. Lawrence Cook was next to find the net unassisted to give Port Perry a 2-0 lead. Nick Ostafichuck played aggres- sive in this game as usual and along with his defen- sive partners Aaron Chambers, Dan Follows, and Keith Hancock, many key defensive plays were made. Joel Van Camp scored his second of the game late in the opening period on a shot that was screened. Assists were given to Jon Sanders and Erik Troan. Minutes later Tim Wray found the back of the net with a nice goal after being set up by Erik Troan and Joel Van Camp to close the scoring for Port Perry as they went into the second period with a 4-2 lead. In the second period Joel Van Camp completed his hat trick by going strong to the net and putting it through the pads for the nice goal. Assists went to Jon Sanders and Jared Aldridge. Jon Sanders was next to provide the offense for Port Perry after being set up by Nick Ostafichuck and Justin Sheehey. Port Perry could have put two more goals on the board but the Uxbridge ref- erees never fail when 1t comes to making question- able calls and it turned out that Port Perry would not need these goals anyway as they handed Uxbridge the defeat in the opening game of the playoffs. Many key saves in this game were provided by Chris Loughlin who played a solid game in the Port Perry nets. Bill Van Camp coached a good game behind the bench and was able to keep his players under control as the intensity level got higher in this game. Steve Troan also coached a good game behind the Port Perry bench. Ken Ellis and Jared Aldridge played very well on forward to help Port Perry pick up the victory and start their playoff run. Juveniles finished Basic Boys end season with a loss to Cobourg in Game 5 of the OMHA playoffs SOCCER SIGN-UP: Registration for the Scugog Soccer Association con- tinued this past weekend when an opportunity for signing up was held at CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRYSTAR Tourist Events Durham. The league, which has about 800 youngsters participate each year, will be accepting registrations at the local business, located above Sunys Gas Bar, until the end of March. Here, Caesarea's Laureen Timmers and her 16-year-old daughter Crystal sign some forms while Colin Dodd, the League's House League convener, accepts a cheque for $250 from Kinsmen treasurer Larry Kendall. Merchants continue their march towards Ontario title From Page 19 "This was a tough one to lose," he continued, adding that Darrach's OT goal came off a giveaway near the Chief blue line, penalties hurt his team and "some of the veterans "were not pro- ducing" throughout the series. For Geoff Field, the game two victory "turned the corner" for the Merchants h and "gave us all kinds of confidence." Field doesn't think his team has peaked yet, saying the power play needs some work and they have to start turning in 60 minutes of solid hockey. Looking ahead to the next playoff round against Campbellford (who oust- ed the Napanee Raiders in four straight) the Merchants won 7-2 and lost 2-0 in inter-locking league games this season. Field said his team is going into the series with a lot of confidence after the dramatic victory over the Chiefs. But Merchants will be without four players for the two weekend games who had booked southern holidays. Asked about this, Field shrugged and said "We don't want to make a big deal of it. We've got players who can fill in......... we'll make do." Game one in the Merchant-Rebel series is this Friday in Campbellford at 8:00 PM, with game two Saturday in Little Britain at 7:30. The teams will flip for home ice advantage before game one. Members of the Rebel staff were on hand for the series clinching game in Little Britain and no doubt will spend this week trying to come up with a plan to stop No. 88 in the red and white sweaters. It's all over for this year, much to the disappointment of players and manage- ment. The Mike's Food Basic boys went down quietly to Cobourg in five games, but not until they went through two protests, winning one and losing the other. Cobourg instituted the first protest regarding one of Port's players who because of a suspension, and even though the O.M.H.A. agreed that the referee in Cobourg could have screwed up the Basic boys still lost. This backfired on Cobourg however as 1t was learned they also used an inel- igible player and he and the coach received additional suspensions. The boys gave it their best for the most part and when they were on the ice, played hard checking and aggressive hockey. Port jumped into a lead in every game but eventually would figure out a way to lose it. should have been sitting out a game It was a very interesting year. For the coaches, it was an insight into our teenagers who are quite easily criticized by many people, quite often wrongly. They had their problems from time to time, but for the most part, these were a good bunch of boys. Other than a few (many) unnecessary penalties, there were no problems with these guys and we are proud of them. The team would also like to thank the volunteer parents that jumped in to make sure these guys could have a team. Thanks goes to Jason Phillips who was there whenever he could and was a guiding hight for the team. Also thanks to Linda Hunter and Judy Smith who let Bob Hunter and Gary Smith come out to help (play). Also, thank you to Nancy Morden who looked after the gate for us and the many parents who helped when she was busy. What's the score?
