PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1998 - 9 Assessment officers with the Ministry of Finance estimated that a few hundred Scugog Township residents made their way to the Council Chambers last Thursday and Friday when a session was held By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog Township resi- dents with questions about their new property assessment had the opportunity to get some answers last week. Assessment officers from the Ministry of Finance continued their trek around Durham Region last week; stop- ping at the Scugog munic- ipal offices Thursday and Friday. Valuation Manager Wayne Ashton said the workers were here to answer questions people may have about the new assessment of their prop- erty. "This allows the ratepayers to review, and discuss if they wish, their new assessment. We can show them what they have on their property and how we came about their exact assessment," he said Thursday morn- ing. The new assessments, which reflect market value as of June 30, 1996, will help with taxation purposes and municipal rates in the upcoming years, he explained. "We're here to assure people what we have on paper 1s correct and rea- sonable... If they are not sure that we are correct then we can set up an appointment and have someone go to their home and reassess it and review what we have for them; to put their mind at ease." Anyone who has con- cerns with their review has until June 29, 1998 to file an appeal. While people in other parts of the province -- especially Toronto, where taxes have in some neigh- borhoods soared -- have seen red over huge increases in their proper- ty taxes, Mr. Ashton says he's heard few complaints from Scugog residents. "They seem to under- stand what we are doing and I believe they like the idea of having an up-to- date value of their home and property," he said. Learning Disabilities Association Durham West is holding its next meeting Thursday, March 26 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 35 Church Street North, Pickering Village. Assessment officers busy in Scugog The last reassessment in Scugog Township was held in 1984, so we didn't see wild swings in assess- ment values of the sort that occurred in Toronto. A piece of property 1s assessed on the lot and home size, additions such as garages and pools, as well as a total price. New assessments were mailed out to Durham Region residents on Feb. 12 and notices of Community Assessment Information Sessions were included. There are two more weeks scheduled for these sessions, includ- ing Oshawa this week and Clarington the following one. All other municipali- ties have held meetings, he said.
