24- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Port Bantams eliminate Stouffville in five: wait for winner of Essex/Woolwich series Nutty Boys dump Stouffville, get set for OMHA finals Port Perry's Bantam No. I team, sponsored by The Nutty Chocolatier, com- menced their OMHA, best of seven, semi-final playoff series with Stouffville on March 1. In a very exciting game Port came away with a 9-3 win. It was a close contest until Port took control in the third period. Port jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first before Stouffville staged a rally to score the next three goals for a 3-2 lead midway through the second period. Before the end of the second period Port had stormed back to take a 4-3 lead into the third period. The third was Port's period as they completely stymied all efforts made by Stouffville and cruised to the 9-3 win. Great effort all around. Jason Whitworth led all scorers with three goals and two assists, followed by Braden Tarbotton with three goals and one assist. Mark Blakley chipped in with one goal and three assists, with a goal and an assist going to Matt Skerratt and Dave Justynski. Matt MacMaster led the assist parade with four, with Grant Hooker and Dean Van Camp picking up a pair each and Sean Jeffrey with one assist. Jeff Wiggins played in net for Port and was very busy in the first two periods making some fine saves. ® Game two was played on March 4 at the Scugog Arena and an exciting and close game 1t was for all in attendance. Port got the early lead as Jason Whitworth scored, assisted by Grant Hooker. Stouffville tied the game before the end of the first period. In the second once again Port took the lead as Braden Tarbotton was set up nicely by Matt MacMaster. Stouffville never gave up as they scored the next two goals for a 3-2 lead after two periods. In the third Port came back to life as they scored two goals for the 4-3 win and a 2-0 lead in the series. Matt MacMaster and Dean Van Camp picked the assists on the winning goal. Chris Monsma played a strong game in net for Port picking up the win. On March 6 Port played game three back In Stouffville. The first period was exciting as Port put a lot of pressure in the Stouffville end but unfor- tunately could not score. It wasn't until five min- utes into the second period before Dave Justynski scored assisted by Dean Van Camp and Mark Blakley. Stouffville rallied and over the rest of the game scored four goals for CROSSWORD ANSWERS the 4-1 win. The team returned to the friendly confines of the Scugog Arena on March 8 for game four. In another entertaining and exciting game Port managed a 4-3 win in overtime. [t was late in the second period when Stouffville opened the scoring before Port charged back with two quick goals scored by Braden Tarbotton and Mark Blakley. Picking up assists were Scott Duncan, Matt Skerratt, Dean Van Camp and Jason Whitworth. In the third period Stouffville turned things around with two goals of their own for a 3-2 lead. It wasn't until 11 seconds remaining that Grant Hooker's blast from the point tied the game and sent it into overtime. The overtime was a tense affair for all in atten- dance but finally at the "Back By Popular Demand" HEART OF COUNTRY CRAFT SHOW March 27th & 28th once again scored an over- time victory for the series win. Stouffville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the sec- ond period. Port put on their rally caps in the third period as they peppered the Stouffville net. They finally broke down the Stouffville defence as Dean Van Camp scored assisted by Matt MacMaster and Jason Whitworth. With one minute remaining in the third Matt MacMaster poked home the tying goal and once again sent the game into overtime. Port did not wait long as Dean Van Camp scored his second overtime winner of the series 17 seconds into the fourth period to give Port the win. The boys really dug down to come back and win this game and clinch the series.
