Organized by the Concerned Citizens of Durham group, the event is aimed at distributing information on a global agreement critics say poses a real threat to democracy. Concerned Citizens chair Patrice Gibson Kirby of Port Perry has lined up a number of speakers who will describe the negative impacts they see for culture, education, and other aspects of life with passage of the document. The MAI is essentially another multi- national trade agreement, following NAFTA, GATT and other similar treaties. Critics say the treaty, which involves 25 of the world's richest countries, will reduce the capability of national govern- ments to limit foreign investment, or impose standards on investors. The results, ultimately, would be the loss of autonomy for countries, they fear. Thursday's rally, to be held around the picnic shelter in Palmer Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will see a variety of photo- copied information handed out. In addi- tion, Concerned Citizens of Durham members will be on hand to answer ques- tions. Speakers include: a Patrice Gibson Kirby of Concerned Citizens of Durham; J Ann Emmett of Toronto; adJoanne Dies of Pickering, to speak on education 1ssues, and a Garry Neil of ACTRA, who will address cultural impacts. In addition to the speakers and infor- mation tables, there will be clowns, magi- cians, face painting and music for chil- dren. The rally is part of a nation-wide ini- tiative against the MAI launched by the Council of Canadians.
