"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 24, 1998 - 11 KFA set for another season on Scugog Conservationists have several projects in the works on the lake By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The summer of 1998 will be a busy one for the members and volunteers of the Kawartha Fisheries Association (KFA). KFA president Sandy Beaton says that the con- servation organization is getting set for another year of working on and around lakes in the Kawartha area. One of the projects that will continue once again in 1998 will be the cause- way clean-up, which was a tremendous success dur- ing its first year last sum- mer. Last summer local mer- chants all kicked in funds to help pay for a local teen to spend time twice a week picking up refuse from the roadway. "The merchants were very, very supportive in 1997 and this year we hope to do it all summer," said Mr. Beaton. He hopes that the clean-up can begin during the first week of May and continue until after the long weekend in September. "Hopefully it will encourage (fishermen) to pick up after themselves if we start before (the sea- son)," he said. KFA members are also Juried art show 'coming in April An exhibition of art by members of the OAA will open at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on Thursday, April 23. "We're working on and anticipating a partnership with the MOE and the Great Lakes 2000 project, which will allow us to identify bacterial hotspots in seven lakes, Scugog Ministry of being one of them," said Mr. Beaton. Testing would begin around the area lakes, including checking how well the local sewage treatment plant is actual- ly working, to see if there are any particularly bad spots that need attention. "We just want to make sure the lakes are not overrun by certain types of bacteria," he said. "That 2-Door 4-Door ACL EIL Features: ACHE Features: 1s the reason why they close beaches." Also in the works is fix- ing spawning grounds for muskie, which were blocked due to ice pressure causing ground heaves. Mapping of the shore- line of Lake Scugog will also be completed and sur- veyors will move on Pigeon and Rice Lakes. Cross Creek and small portions of the shoreline in Mariposa have yet to be mapped. Mr. Beaton 1s happy with the results of the ambitious project. "Incredible, just incred- ible. By the second week of April we should have all the data constructed." He stresses that the KFA is not a fishing group, but an organization determined to help out local lakes and it's habitat.
