PORT PERRY STAR » Tuesday, March 24, 1998 - 5 J CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR SPRING TIME?: Scugog Township, along with most parts of Ontario, was blanketed in snow over the weekend, just days after the first day of spring officially arrived. Here, Doug Griffin, a Bigelow St. resident, got to work cleaning early Sunday. What's the scoop? Sgt. Ken Hudson of Port Perry's 26 Division said police are investigat- ing numerous thefts of tools in the area just south of Port Perry. "There have been quite a few tool thefts there recently; there are plenty of people there who use tools, especially power ones, for their hobbies and businesses," he said Friday morning, just hours after an Old Simcoe St. resident thwarted an attempted robbery of his garage. Police received a call around 4:15 a.m. on March 20 after a man con- fronted two would-be thieves on his property. The home owner awoke after hearing noises out- side. Upon going outside, he discovered a man behind his garage. A second sus- pect was inside the man's van. They both took off running down Old Simcoe St. to King St., then fled west to a waiting vehicle, say police. Returning to his home, Durham Police say that the resident found a back- FIND OUT! why hospitals are aT VV VEA aTe IR { g T=) HEALING POWERS ia : iI « REIKI LEVEL | SEMINAR SF) OP \Y) P= To] s JES LR HOE, IER Ho o]o]4 5) A RET REET treat themselves Reiki has been known to benefit many health problems from headaches to heart problems. Police suspect the thieves were filling the bags with tools from the vehicle and hiding them behind the garage. They're described as being between 59" and 510", and each wore dark clothes and hoods, report police. Police seized three backpacks. A pair of bolt cutters and a crowbar where also found at the scene, add police. Police are investigat- ing two other incidents in the same area, which they believe may be linked. Sometime overnight between March 18-19, 6% 6% police say thieves stole a large amount of tools from a garage on Old Simcoe St. After failing to pry open a door on the south side of a garage, thieves kicked in the bottom por- tion of an eastern door and removed many items including air tools and a bench grinder. A second person was probably involved in the theft, say police, as a heavy gas generator was taken. Police were called to another Old Simcoe St. home after thieves attempted to enter a garage. Thieves used bolt cutters to cut off a large lock but had cut off the wrong side and could not enter the garage. While the police are presently unsure where the stolen tools are going, Sgt. Hudson said there are many places they could be. "There has got to be a market for them some- where; thieves are taking just about everything but they seem to be after the tools in the Prince Albert area," he said about the recent crime spree over the past month. "People should be warned that this is going on and I think that, as a precaution, they should leave lights on around their buildings. The noise, along with the lights, seemed to alert some peo- ple and that could be all you need to stop a theft."
