"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 31, 1998 - 15 Antrim issues another Scugog Challenge Sailors are sought for second annual fundraiser race on Lake Scugog By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Scugog Challenge Cup will return to the cool waters of Lake Scugog this year in an effort to raise funds for the local library. The inaugural event, held last April was deemed a success by organizers. The second running of the Cup will be held during the fourth weekend of May, with a few changes this year. The most notable difference, says orga- nizer Dave Hillier, will be the date the event is held. "It was a little chilly last year; hopefully the weather -- and the water -- will be a little warmer this year," he said Friday, reminiscing about the Antrim House Pub's victory after the boat piloted by Woodwind Yacht's Ken Lavalette capsized and sank just off shore on April 27 last year. This year the winner of the 1998 Scugog Challenge Cup will be determined on May 24. The other significant change is that the competition is open to all sailors. Invitations have been sent to marinas from Mississauga to Oshawa. The sailing event raises funds for the Scugog Memorial Public Library. Organizers hope to attract more competitors to this year's race, planned for May 24. "Last year, being the first year, was pretty successful," said Mr. Hillier. "We raised some money for the (Scugog Memorial Public) library and for the Durham Rowing Club, and we're going to be giving the proceeds to the library again this year. "This time, however, we want to have a few more boats entered; we have three or four entered now and having six or oP Kids & Country Go Great with this 3+1 bedroom newly decorated raised bungalow. w/o from kit. to 14x20 ft. cedar deck overlooking private backyard & backing onto tree fam. A 50/50-style draw will be held with the tickets purchased on the winning boat to see who wins the prize. The winner of the race will receive a cash prize as well as bragging rights that come with holding the Scugog Cup. The race, which kicks off at high noon on May 24, will see entrants navigate a triangular course over a kilometre long just off of Palmer Park. About 80 people took in the event from shore last year, and Mr. Hillier is hoping for a larger gallery this time around. "It'll be warmer this year so hopefully more people will come out and support the race," Mr. Hillier said. "Hey, 80 people came out last April to see two stupid guys race their boats in cold water, so I expect to see lots more this year when there are more people rac- ing in the warm weather," he added. Library CEO Tom Bonnano appreciates the support from the event. "It's a great job being done by these guys. It gets people out to enjoy the water- front, and the library's on the waterfront too," he said. "An event like this, especially with some money going to the library, is always appreciated. I know that they didn't make a lot of money for us last year but it was a nice gesture," he said. Funds raised from the Scugog Challenge Cup will be used to purchase books and articles related to boats and sailing. Anyone wishing to participate or vol- unteer are asked to call The Antrim House Pub at 985-8853 or Scugog Memorial Public Library at 985-7686.
