22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 7, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Presentation to be held April 19 at 11 a.m. Father Hugh, friends to show slides of the Holy Land St. John's Anglican News i By Colin Beal Hl The traditional Palm Sunday Service at St. John's started in the Church Hall with Father Hugh blessing the Palms. After & distribution of Palms to members of the congregation, the assembly was led in procession into the church. The children of the Church School then presented a delightful Liturgical Dance, with singing, in celebration of Palm Sunday. This was followed by a dramatized reading of the Passion according to St. Luke. The choir sang an anthem, "On that day when He rode into Jerusalem." After all this Choral Eucharist was celebrated. It was "a beautiful and moving service and a fitting beginning to Holy he During Holy Week at St. John's there will be church services on Tuesday and, of course on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as we build up to Easter Sunday. On Tuesday there will be a Eucharist at 7 p.m. The Holy Thursday Eucharist will start a 7:30 and will be followed by a Holy Hour. On Good Friday there will be a Service of The Stations of the Cross at 10 a.m. This will be a version specially written for children but adults are welcome to join in this traditional Good Friday event. At 11 a.m. the tra- ditional Good Friday Service will be held. The Great Vigil of Easter will be celebrated at 7:30 on Holy Saturday with the traditional Vigil Liturgy (Lighting of the New Fire, Blessing of The Paschal Candle and the Font, the ringing of Bells which have been silenced present 10th Annual Hee Giant throughout Lent, etc.) and with Choral Eucharist. All this leads up to the 9:30 a.m. Great Choral Eucharist of Easter Sunday, at which this year, there will also be Baptism. It's a busy but wonderful week with glorious traditional music, moving liturgy and ritual...a real spiritual treat. Have you ever wanted to make a trip to the Holy Land but never could manage to get away? Well, on Sunday, April 19 at about 11 a.m. Father Hugh and his fellow pilgrims from St. John's will be showing off their slides and photo albums, their guide books and souvenirs and will be also chat- ting about their experiences and offering samples of the foods which they ate (in the hotels and in the bazaars) It sounds as though it will be a lot of fun and the organizers are very enthusi- astic about it. So, if you'd like to attend a travelogue with a differ- ence, do come and join us. Eileen McLaughlin, P.R.O. Course to be held May 9 by St. John Ambulance St. John Ambulance of Durham Region, is offering a course on "What Every Babysitter Should Know" from May 9 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This inexpensive course will teach children age 11 to 13 years basic first aid training and arti- ficial respiration for both infants and children. Skills and guide- lines include dealing with shy- ness, colic, nightmares, temper tantrums, nutritional/danger- ous snacks and more.
