22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 14, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Latest stage in migration study a success Trials with cranes, geese leading up to work on endangered birds By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Saturday morning, the cranes came home. Under a bright sun and a brisk wind came six Sandhill Cranes, riding strong thermal winds.. aircraft, piloted by a pair of men the birds have come to know and trust. After circling the field briefly, the birds touched down just southeast of Port Perry at almost exactly noon. Having landed just ahead of the cranes, Operation Migration's Joe Duff enthusiastically greeted the birds he and Bill Lishman had accompanied on their migration to Virginia last fall. ~ "Hi guys, welcome home, welcome back," he said to the gangly birds as they milled about. . and two ultra-light Moments later Bill Lishman landed, and the two men shook hands and embraced. Mr. Lishman said the latest chapter in the continuing Operation Migration experiment -- which began with his teaching a flock of hand-raised Canadian Geese to migrate on a set pattern -- is a rousing success. "Just the fact that they made it back to this area at all proves our point," he said. First landed in St. Catharines "A lot of 'experts' on migratory behavior told us this could not be done," he said, surveying his flock. "Well, here they are." Mr. Duff said that as soon as they heard the birds had made it to St.Catharines early last week, he knew the experiment with the cranes was successful. "We got a call that they landed in a playground there.... well, they must like play grounds because they landed in another one near Orangeville. "We flew up there, and this morning we all took off for the final leg home." The experiments involving both the geese and the cranes are being under- taken in the hope that Operation Migration can repeat its past success, this time with the rare and endangered Whooping Crane. The team will work with those birds in hopes of establishing new flocks and bringing the Whooping Crane back from the brink of extinction. Mr. Duff said that the Operation Migration team 1s continuing to break new ground. "The experts keep saying we can't do certain things, or the birds aren't capable of certain things," he said. Cranes proved experts wrong "They keep proving the experts to be mistaken, don't they?." The two men agreed on one thing about the final flight home: Mr. Lishman said, "cold up there? Man, you've got no idea!" As the men behind Operation Migration celebrated their latest suc- cess the Cranes quietly munched corn, oblivious to the scientific history they are helping to write. 24 Hr.
