Almost 900 youngsters will participate this summer Scugog Soccer Club set to kick off '98 with record number of players As of March 31, the Scugog Soccer Club has received more than 870 registrations from Scugog residents, a record number for this early in the year. To ensure that all the young participants get the best possible officiating, the club has already scheduled two coaching clinics and one refereeing clinic. The exhibition games that kick off the house league season are scheduled for the week of May 19, to prepare for house league ames that start the following week. Ray Dallas, president of the Scugog Soccer Club, states "All clinics are to be held between 9 a.m. and noon at the Port Perry Baptist Church at 2210 Hwy. 7A, near the Island Road. The first coaching skills development clinic, on April 18 will "be for house league and beginning coaches. This clinic will also be suit- "able for anyone who wishes to brush up on the rules and changes that have been implemented during the past couple of years. The following week on April 25, the second clinic will be for coaches of the older age group teams, age 13 and up, and for the representative teams. A $10 fee will be charged for this clinic to cover the cost of a coach- ing manual that coaches will take home. for more information on this advanced clinic call Mark Cole at 985-4309 before April 23. The refereeing clinic, scheduled for May 9, will be conducted by one «b of the most experienced, senior refer- ees in Southern Ontario at the Scugog Soccer Fields. Young soccer players, 12 years of age and older, who wish to earn some pocket money refereeing soccer games in the evening during the summer are welcome to attend. Interested adults and coaches are also welcome. This clinic is also an excellent opportunity for parents to learn how they can help their children play better football. Dallas also said "The increased Coaching clinics will be held this Saturday at the Baptist Church interest in soccer in Scugog Township has also caused an unexpected prob- lem, one of finding enough playing space. Nevertheless this is a good problem and the club is getting sup- port from the community. For exam- ple, Port Perry High School has agreed to let the soccer club use its field all summer." This appears to be a good match because it helps the high school students develop skills they will use in the school's soccer season in the fall. "We are currently creating sched- ules and teams," Dallas said. "In some age groups we need players, but in other sections the coordinators have had to create waiting lists because even with help from the schools, there simply is not enough playing space to accommodate all the players and teams from Scugog. We especially need more small fields for the younger age groups. The club is currently trying to locate other possible sites, but we are also going to use portable nets so that we can use our existing fields to the best advantage." This underlines the growth in soc- cer because the township's existing fields ar® one of the largest, and potentially the best integrated, multi- field soccer site in the Durham Region, something the citizens of Port Perry should be proud of. 1998 Scugog Soccer League Schedule Beginning Coaching Clinic - April 18-9 a.m. to noon - Port Perry Baptist Church.
