"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 28, 1998 - 21 Committee will look at recreation options From page 1 located just up the street from the recreation centre spoke of the frustration residents already feel because of youth loitering in the area. "I live at the four cor- ners... and I am here to tell you that we do not need to give the youth more reason to be here," sald Michelle Davies. "Not once do I get a full eight hours sleep. Not once do I get through a night without them (youth) doing something to my car or egging win- dows or something." "I am against the arcade... it breeds prob- lems," she said. One of several young people said in a very quiet voice: "If there was some- thing to do we wouldn't hang around on the streets." Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers chaired the meeting. In squaring off against Mr. Ford, he expressed his doubts about the viability and appropriateness of a games room in the base- ment at the rec centre. "The arcade seems to cause the most concern," he said. "I don't see a ben- efit back to the communi- ty from it." And he warned the board that youth prob- lems were not part of its mandate. "It is not the job of this council," he said. "The job of this council is not to run Blackstock. Its job is to run this centre." Councillor Carruthers also commented that fig- ures put forward by Mr. Ford, predicting $300 a week in costs, against a profit of around $1,000, are not realistic. And when mention of grounds improvements were brought up by Mr. Ford, the councillor snapped, "The money was all in place to do those things, and we lost it." Councillor Carruthers was referring to the town- ship's proposal to sell a portion of undeveloped land in Blackstock to Springfest is coming up in Little Britain Springfest '98 Fun Fair is being held at Dr. George Hall Public School in Little Britain May 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be coffee .shop, barbecue, plant sale (Boys and Girls Club Daycare) book fair, out- door flea market (new and used items), kiss the pig contest, fire depart- ment display, bake sale, cake walk, sumo wrestling clowns and balloons and competi- tions. Lots of prizes for everyone, raise funds for upgrades at the fairgrounds on the rec centre site. Some local residents, including Mr. Ford, objected and took the mat- ter to the Ontario Municipal Board. Opponents lost their appeal but by the time it was done, the government funding sought by the township was no longer available. The exchanges between Ford and Carruthers became so heated at one point that Rev. He asked "that the board air its dirty laundry at some other more appro- priate time." Spectators applauded. Blair Martyn, a former chair and long time mem- ber of the committee, helped control the turbu- lent meeting by asking that a committee be formed to investigate community projects. "That committee can study ideas for beautifi- cation, improvement and youth activities and report back to us on what J the people want." With board approval, a committee will be formed to study projects to take the Blackstock Recreation Complex into the year 2000. The rec board expects more meetings in the future to discuss the volunteers report. After the meeting Councillor Carruthers refused any comment on the night's outcome. Mr. Ford was happy over all with the night's outcome. "Well, we have to do something to get some movement out of this board," he said. ry o () Cr ronp 10° Wf Sunday, May 10 8:30am to 11:30am 95 plus taxes Children 12 & under $4.95 plus taxes More details in next week's paper Includes juice and coffee or tea Done Demy Oncginal HAUGEN'S CHICKEN & RIBS BB() HWY. 12 & 7A, Manchester J lo 1g TT ESR |W Te -TAVI=N: Wedel o Jol gl (o] § REY 0] ol ol o EET [Ta CH 01010] 0) (a VA OFo] [Ted £10] [13 want Ee AA, REIT, A FIR SERRE IHR 35955 and Mirrors With Automatic and Air Conditioning * Power Locks, Windows * Speed Control & Tilt Steering * 8" Cargo Bed * The Most Powerful Standard Engine in its Class * AM/FM Stereo Cassette Plus No Extra Charge STX Package: * 17" Cast Aluminum Wheels * 17" Oversize Tires * 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio * Colour-keyed Front and Rear Bumpers * Special STX Decal (oO LL ER UCN CETTE EIT CY that's right for you.
