2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 28, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Raised $2,500 last year By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Local volunteers are putting out a call for old household goods which will be used to help chil- dren at Toronto's Sick Kids' Hospital. For the second year in a row, Bryan and Judy Pawlin, along with numerous other area organizers, will be hold- ing a garage sale this spring, with all the pro- ceeds being passed along to the hospital. The sale will be held on May 30 and 31 at 16950 Old Simcoe St, just north of Port Perry, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The key to making the fundraiser a success is the community help- ing out and passing on their old, unused goods to be sold, said Mr. Pawlin. "We're looking for people to help us out here; anything that they Items sought for yard sale; funds go to Sick Kids' think is still usable, but they don't need, we'd appreciate it being passed on to us. "We want to get as many household goods as we can. Anything anyone is discarding -- as long as it's worth something -- would be great. The only thing we aren't accepting is clothing," he said, adding that a water heater and water soft- ener have already been donated. Just over $2,500 was raised for Toronto's Sick Kids' Hospital last year during the inaugural sale. Anyone wishing to donate items to the sale are asked to call the Pawlins at 985-1957 or drop them off at 106 Crandell St. or at the site of the garage sale. Items can be dropped off up to the day of the fundraiser. JUST DROPPING IN: A Sandhill crane strolls nonchalantly among kids at Prince Albert Public School last week, after sud- denly dropping in. The bird is part of the flock raised and flown south last autumn by Operation Migration; they returned to Canada this spring, alighting more than once in school yards. Operation Migration's Joe Duff reckons the birds are attracted by the sound of children at play. This bird was wrangled and taken back to be with the rest of the flock near Port Perry. But in the meantime, kids and staff -- who supplied photos, thank you very much -- enjoyed watching their gangly visitor.
