8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 28, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Scugog Historical Society members went for a cruise on Ontario's back roads Thursday night, and they didn't leave the room. The tour through some of Ontario's least- known villages and ghost towns came courtesy of Toronto author Ron Brown, whose list of his- torical books includes Lost Villages of Toronto, Ghost Towns of Ontario and The Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore. With slides and a fast, often humorous patter, Mr. Brown took the audi- ence of around 40 through the history of roads in the province and little known facts about the development of thor- oughfares like Yonge St. and Davenport Ave. in Toronto. "There were taverns every six miles on Yonge St., and they paid the stage drivers to stop at each one," he said. "...No wonder it took so many years for anyone to notice the poor road conditions." road transport which often involved horse- drawn carriages and cars Cruising historical back roads Popular author Ron Brown gives Historical Society a tour in talk transport over the years, though. "When they built the 401, the average speed of traffic on it was said to be 15 miles per-hour," he said. "We have improved on that... sort of. Now if you drive the 401 through Toronto, the average appears to be 15 kilome- ters per hour." Paul Arculus, past president of the society and author of The Star's historical Sketches of Scugog series, praised Mr. Brown for making the history of the province so accessible for so many people. "When I taught histo- ry there was hardly a way to make Canadian history interesting," said Mr. Arculus. "Then came a breed of writer like Ron Brown, who began to give Author Ron Brown was guest speaker at a meeting of the Scugog Historical Society last week. He entertained his audience with tales of transportation in days gone by. Slides showed early Ontario history life." Mr. Brown's books -- which are highlighted with numerous illustra- tions -- are available at local book stores and the Scugog Memorial Public Library. buried to the axles in mud. "Right now we are wait- ing for the new (Durham District School Board) bud- get to be released to see if... there is money from the province to do it," she said Tuesday. "Right now we are up in the air." Organizers had planned to have raised close to $100,000 by last fall in hopes of showing the board they could contribute towards the proposed $500,000 project. Currently the school has raised just over $7,500, Ms Riches said. "Right now the board is looking at line items; fig- uring out how much they have to spend, and where the money for projects are going and what the priori- ties are," she said. A decision on the addi- tion to the 126-year-old school should be made by Respite volunteers are needed Durham Family Respite ple living with a disability. Plans for renovations to the south side of the current building were slat- ed for 1996, but budget constraints kept them from happening. It was also hoped a new 5,400 square-foot library on the south side of the existing building could be opened by 2000. Ms Riches told The Star last year that PPHS had been pushing a new library for a few years, but that the school board had been unable to accommodate the request. The high school has been pleading with the board for a larger resource centre because of the small size of the existing one, and because of the poor quality of current music rooms, which would be moved to the old library if it 1s replaced. "We're still definitely pushing for this because we have to meet the needs of our students," said Ms Riches. "The curriculum is changing and with the push on technology and information we need more spaces to centralize our resources." Local public elementary schools, such as R.H. Cornish and S.A. Cawker, both have larger libraries than the high school, said Ms Riches. NY LO 11S 110070) 8 DENTAL CENTRE 238 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY In) * DR. J. HARDY * DR. L.
