School's production places emphasis on imagination Port Perry Star As a small group of ugly trolls make their way around the room in the wake of a large dragon, a smile spreads across the face of one of them. "Hey.... trolls don't smile! There are no happy trolls!" a woman watching the pro- cession reminds the char- acters. Roslynne Gower, Epsom Public School's Grade 1 teacher, turns her head and laughs. The 21 charges in her room have done a good job working on their characters' movements but, still need reminders to con- trol their facial expres- sions... and not to walk past the black lines, and off the "stage". As the rehearsal contin- ues, Ms Gower explains that the children are gain- ing hands-on experience that ties in almost all their curriculum. The show is to be staged May 13 to 15 at the Epsom Church. "They like the strong, unusual rhythm that's like a short heartbeat; the kids are just eating it up.... there's no age limit on the appreciation for music," said Ms Gower. As part of the Muse workshop program artist Barb McKenzie, writer Elizabeth Johns and dancer Maria Carnovale have worked with students in producing the play, which will showcase their talents and what they have learned. "Each class will repre- sent a culture; that way the whole school is involved," said Ms Gower. Her class will do a Celtic production to Loreena McKennitt's "The "They're doing some- thing on dragons, and shape changers and Druids. The Druids recorded histo- ry and in their part the Druid keeps writing and writing; he doesn't stop. They want to put his work into dance. "The kids are so excited; they get to write their own script. Everyone's involved, and there's total participa- tion." Teachers have had input into the production, but are striving to allow the children to let their cre- ativity show. "We've collaborated with them at some points, but basically as teachers we let them go," Ms Gower said. "It's a real learning expe- rience for the students -- as writers, actors and pro- ducers. "This is serious business to them; there is focus in their eyes. If only Loreena McKennitt could see what they are doing to her music."
