When it comes to the latest series of hardy shrub roses, which have the unlikely name "pavement roses," the word "beautiful" 1s a must. Pavement roses are as lovely as you would expect a rose to be, but also remarkably tough. The name "pavement" refers to their suitability to street- side plantings. They are tolerant of heat, drought and cold, grow well in intense sunlight or partial shade, and tolerate high levels of salt in soil. Now, if a rose could take all that and still bloom beautifully, imagine how well it would thrive in the comparable comfort of your own garden! Pavement roses are generally low, sprawling bushes, on average 2 feet (75 centimetres) tall and 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 centimetres) wide. They make very attractive groundcovers or an outstanding feature shrub. There are seven varieties in the series, most of which bloom all summer. All have fragrant flowers. "Purple Pavement" has unusual, very attractive, semi-double flowers of purplish-red offset by a yellow centre, borne in small trusses. If you prefer red roses, choose "Scarlet Pavement" for its semi- double flowers and showy, bright red rosehips. In white, there are two choices. "Snow Pavement" has double flowers with a pink tint and blooms throughout the season. "Pristine Pavement" blooms in pure white with perfumed, semi-double roses all summer. Gardeners who prefer pink roses have the widest selection. Choose a site with well-drained soil, and work a generous handful of bonemeal into the soil of each hole before planting. Dig the planting hole wide enough for the entire root system to spread out. Pavement roses are not grafted, so they can be planted at the same depth as they were growing in their pots. Water roses regularly; they need more moisture than most plants. On average, water once a week to a depth of 1 inch. Poke your finger into the soil to check the depth of moisture penetration. Fertilize with 28-14-14 once a month in June, July and August.
