"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 5, 1998 - 19 New men's group in Port Perry focuses on parenting Being a Dad...What does it really mean, and do you want to do it better? This is the theme of a new therapeutic support group starting in Port Perry this month, designed to give local men an opportu- nity to examine the quality of their relationships with their children, the women in their lives and issues affecting their health and happiness. The goal is for partici- pants to become better men to themselves and those close to them. "In The Company of Men" is the name given to the group by its founders, Michael Evans, M.A, Al Drennan, M.Ed, two pro- fessionals from Port Perry. Both men are fathers who feel strongly about the importance of their role and responsibility in the 4-H info night a success By Heather Vale On April 21 the Durham West 4-H Association held an awards and information night at the OMAFRA board room in Port Perry. A variety of clubs received their bars for their completed projects. New and upcoming pro- jects and summer events were discussed. Congratulations to all those who received the six 12, 18 and 24 projects and new leader and member awards and special congratulations to Eleanor McAvoy for receiving Level 2 and Level 3 Volunteer Leadership Development Award. As well the fundrais- ing club hosted a silent auction with a variety of items that were up for bids. It was a huge success. On behalf of the Durham West 4-H and the new fundraising club we would like to thank everyone in the area who donated gifts towards our silent auction. "We have this notion that men don't need to be nur- turers, or aren't very good at it, that their primary role is that of family provider and pillar of strength. By ignoring our own needs for intimacy and closeness, we deprive our- selves and those most important to us of our great- est gifts," said Mr. Evans. The idea for the group sprang from what these professionals see as a lack of support services in the area responding specifically to men's personal growth 1Ssues. : "There are extensive lists of services for women in the region...groups, coun- seling, and social programs. But just try to find some- thing out there to help men deal responsibly with their gender-specific issues. It just isn't available," said Mr. Evans. "In The Company of Men" is for all fathers: step- father, prospective and expectant fathers, separat- ed and divorced fathers, fathers of children, fathers of adults, and grandfathers. The group will meet weekly for seven weeks in Port Perry. For dates, times, places and further information, call 985-1534 or 985-0048.
