Start time is 10 a.m. for both teams. Spectators are welcome, with free admis- sion. The Prince Philip Cup Games are a team compe- tition played by Pony Clubs around the world. The games are played by teams of five riders and five ponies, four of which par- ticipate in each game. All of the games are variations on the relay race, and all are great fun for players and spectators alike. Many of the games require the riders and ponies to run a slalom course around a series of poles from one end of the playing field to the other, where they hand-off something to the next rider on their team. In some races, riders have to vault off of and onto their ponies. This is one of the most photogenic and appealing of all equestrian competitions. Riders must be under the age of 15 as of January 1 to be eligible. There are four levels of competition: C for beginners, B for more experienced riders, and A for the top players, plus unofficial competition at the Masters level, for those over the age limit. There are three meets in each division scheduled in the regular Central Ontario Region season, each hosted by a different Pony Club, finishing with Regional Championships for all divisions. The Regional A and B level champions go on to play for the Eastern Canadian Championship at the Ontario's Pony Club Tournament of Champions. The two top Eastern Canadian A level teams then play against Western Canadian representatives for the National Championship, which alternates between Eastern Canada and get underway Western Canada. This year, it 1s Eastern Canada's turn, with Central Ontario host- ing the event at the tour- nament. Pony Club is the largest international equestrian organization in the world, with over 120,000 mem- bers. Aside from Prince Philip Games, it offers com- petition in show jumping, dressage, a modified form of eventing (dressage plus cross-country jumping plus stadium jumping), tetrathalon - which com- bines swimming, shooting, running and cross-country jumping - and academic competition in quiz format. From Page 26 more than one hour away from the school -- he says that he's still consid- ering attending one of them. Currently shooting in the mid-70s, Chris says that he has no strong part in his games, but that it just comes together as a complete package. "I don't rely on just my drives or my putting; I have a well-rounded game. I'm always trying to get better at everything," he says. He plays a round of golf nearly every night of the week, and on his off-night -- usually Wednesdays -- he can be found at the driv- ing range practicing or in Barrie visiting his coach. "I play six nights a week and I mostly take Wednesdays off because I get tired of walking, That's when I go see (coach) Phil Houghling; he's really helped me improve my game," said Chris, point- ing out that he has knocked nearly 12 strokes off his game thanks to his coach's pointers. And, while tuition, Will continue his education in the US room and board could run as high as $17,000 (Canadian) a year in the US, Chris says that his parents support his deci- sion to continue his edu- cation south of the border. "Both my parents like it and are proud of my deci- sion. My dad is right behind me on this; he makes a lot of phone calls and does most of the work. He's like my manager," he said, adding that all his friends and some teachers are always asking him how he's doing and show support when he's in tour- naments. And, he adds, when the time does come for him to pack his belongings and move off to school, it will be a difficult one. "It'll be hard to leave Port Perry because I have so many friends. It's a place I will miss," he said, pointing out that he'd like to thank his mom and dad; brothers John and Jeff; grandmother, uncle Bob and cousin Kent; girlfriend Karen and friends Rob, Ryan, and Andy; as well as coach Phil Houghling and Will Koopmans.
