14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 12, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Warm spring has farmers anticipating good growing season By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Area farmers could experience one of the best growing years in recent memory, a local agriculture official has predicted. Neil Moore, a crops specialist with Port Perry's Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) office, said the 1998 summer growing season has started off well, and could lead to record crops later this fall. "The fields are in pretty good shape right now, and the winter crops will bring reasonably good results," he said last week. After a warm, dry April, all spring cereals have been planted; two-thirds of the corn crops are in; and a few farmers may even be considering starting their soybeans. "Growth in the fields are rapid com- pared to last year; they're at least two weeks ahead of where they were last year," said Mr. Moore, adding that there has not been much concern over the lack of moisture this early in the season because of morning dews and mists. The favorable conditions are in con- trast to last year, which brought us a wet, gloomy spring that resulted in delays. "This year has been a relaxing time for the farmers to put their crops in because they've had so much time -- so ~ many nice days," said Mr. Moore. "Last year there were only a few nice days and everyone was rushing to plant." Heat, he adds, has also played a big role in making this a great crop season. "On average, we don't start counting heat units until the eleventh of May or so and last year we didn't even start until the end of May. This year we began count- ing on the second or third of May," Mr. Moore explained. But these warm temperatures could bring along drought periods, such as those that played such a large factor in last year's poor crops. Another ill effect of the nice weather this year could be an increase in insect and disease problems, Mr. Moore added. "I anticipate some concerns with the lush growth we are having," he said, pointing out there could be some mildew problems with the spring and winter cereals.
