a 16- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 12, 1998 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR CARRY YOUR SPIRIT: More than two dozen students in S.A. Cawker's Drama Club put on a performance of the production "Carry Your Spirit" on May 6 and 7. The musical featured on a group of seniors returning to their old town to dedicate a new school in honor of a local hero and allows them to reflect on their thoughts about what a hero is. Caught rehearsing for play were, from left, Brianna Whitehead, Katie McLean, and Jenny Clydesdale. Youths are sought : in ter. And illegal dumping isn't making the job any easier Discarded household refuse contin- ues to be a problem which plagues most parts of Scugog Township, said Mr. McDonald. "We've been through this so many times before... it's certainly beginning to be a problem here. People are loading up their garbage and taking it to the dump and get rid of what they accept - - which is most stuff -- and whatever they can't get rid of they dump on a back road," he said, adding that the number of used tires crews have picked up "are stacked as high as a barn". "Pretty much anything that has been turned down at the transfer sta- tions can be found abandoned.... there's old furniture on many places alongside the road here." And, he adds, the reason road crews cannot respond quickly enough to remove all the refuse is because they garbage on the roads. Scugog Township employs 13 people on its roads crews. Last week Mr. McDonald responded to a complaint on Scugog's 6th Line. "We got one or two calls about this one mess and I went and looked at it, got most of it in my pickup truck and hauled it away," he said, describing the deposit as a couple of chairs, a mattress and general garbage. One resident on the 6th Line described the problem there as "getting a little serious. This is a pretty road and.... now they're dumping mattresses on it, and table chairs; leaving garbage right in the middle of the road. I'm getting pretty fed up with it," he said, adding that vandals are also spray painting the road and buildings. The worst areas seem to be the out- lying areas of the township which include the Scugog/Oshawa and Scugog/Clarington boundary roads, as well as Marsh Hill Rd. north of Highway 12 and the Concession One road which runs through Ward 4 east of Durham Rd. 57. "We don't have any problems on (Scugog) Island or in Port Perry, but are busy doing road sweeps in parts of "the two rural wards -- Old Reach the township. "We're really busy right now with dustlaying and sweeping -- regular spring work - and we have to wait until there is a break in that before we can send a crew to pick it up." The township receives between two and three calls each week about Township and Old Cartwright Township -- are pretty bad," said Mr. McDonald. "Right now there are three different places on Edgerton Rd. where living room chairs are. "There are tonnes of garbage left lying around out there, literally tonnes of it." ~~ - " 'RIDGENORTH | hil [R Port Perry Plaza Real Estate Board Access Member to the Toronto Real Estate Board Multiple Listing Service RIDGENORTH REALTY...Your Real Estate Information Centre in the Port Perry Plaza.
