Although some of the opposed had very strong concerns that we need to look at, there were others that had self-involved, unjustifiable reasons for not wanting the event...period. Some of their comments were as follows: 0 "Festival Days does not attract the type of clien- tele that would shop in my store." 985-7425 'Festival Days can work, First of all, none of us should ever judge a book by its cover. Does anyone really know someone else's financial situation? The most unlikely customer could be your best cus- tomer. 0 "We should provide interesting, perhaps more cultural activities which would appeal to the clien- tele who currently visit the town on weekends. The cur- rent events do not seem to attract these people. What about the clientele & " ~~ - [a3] 139 QUEEN ST, PORT PERRY & OPEN HOUSE FOLK ART CLASSES Pen & Oila Registration May 12 - 16 -10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beginners - Advance that currently live here all year round? Believe it or not, most of the people who attend Festival Days are local or from close sur- rounding areas. Our local people are very important people. a "Carnival-goers" atmosphere. Participants are not interested in shop- ping." They may not shop in your store during Festival Days, but maybe they did in someone else's. Festival Days creates an awareness. People are sure to come back once they have dis- covered our "little town." 0 "We, frankly, question the value of Festival Days "as a community event." Obviously, this person(s) has never attended Festival Days in the past. The Scugog Chamber of Commerce strives very hard to provide an assort- ment of activities that appeal to all ages. The Mutt Show, auction, Petting Zoo, music, midway, children's games...to name a few. People locally and from all over Ontario are drawn to this event. Festival Days gives our locals a chance at getting involved to "show off" our great community. 2"They only disrupt nor- mal business. The only one really getting anything out of it is the Scugog Chamber of Commerce." This was the most igno- rant comment (of the few) that I came across, but it did not surprise me. It sounds like this person would rather sit back and complain about what Festival Days doesn't do for his/her business, instead of getting involved to come up with some ways to use Festival Days to their advantage. The Scugog Chamber of Commerce works very hard to get the people here - you have to do your part. Which brings me to my final point. There are a lot of people, including local business owners, who do not know what the Scugog Chamber of Commerce does and why they do the things they do. Most of these peo- If it's given a chance ple are the ones with the negative comments and opinions - if they're not get- ting from it, then they don't want it. They forget that it could be doing some good for their neighbor(s). As a board member and active volunteer, I see these things first hand. Without Festival Days, the funding would not be there to help with the costs of other events such as the Canada Day Celebrations and the Santa Claus Parade. The money has to come from somewhere to offset these costly events that the community has grown to love so much. One thing I know for sure. If the Scugog Chamber of Commerce decided to take the Canada Day Festivities out of Palmer Park and didn't include Queen St. in the Santa Claus Parade route, we would never hear the end of it. ~~ Oh, well. I guess you can't please everybody. Heather Callan, Port Perry Class action Is certified From page 1 Mrs. Bunn sought court permission to rep- resent the other owners of Victorian Village homes, and is seeking damages as high as $6 million from Ribcor and Scugog Township on behalf of the class. Home owners who do not wish to participate in the suit must now opt out of it in writing. After considering the case for more than two months, Justice Jenkins sald in his judgement that the case met all the criteria to be allowed to proceed as a class action. Mrs. Bunn, who is of record for the suit, said she is pleased with the progress made so far. "It's been a long time getting this far," she said. "But we weren't surprised, we knew it would be certified." named as the plaintiff FEATURE CONTRACTOR: CORNERSTON CORNERSTONE CUSTOM HOMES LTD. CUSTOM HOMES : BUILDING ON EXPERIENCE.
