The funding was announced by Jim Flaherty, newly appointed Solicitor General and Minister of Labor at a news conference in Whitby Inspector Mercier "on May 8. Mr. Flaherty called on local govern- ments to "take up our offer to help them hire up to 1,000 new officers." Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine welcomed the offer. "Every new officer we can get out on patrol increases the level of service we can provide to the people we are sworn to pro- tect," Chief McAlpine said. | "This new provincial funding will help us do the job of making our communities safer and more secure."
