Joining the Redmen for portions of the 1998 season is former Whitby Warrior Matt Shearer, whom the Redmen obtained from Six Nations at the time of the junior draft. Shearer was a prolific goalscorer for the Whitby Warriors, amass- ing 152 goals, 111 assists, 263 points in a combined 112 regular season and playoff games for the Warriors. Shearer suited up 11 times in 1993 and 1994 for the Redmen while he was still a junior, accu- mulating 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points. Employment commitments will keep Shearer out of approximately 40 per cent of Brooklin's regular sea- son games, however he will be available for the dura- tion of the playoffs. Brooklin's goaltending duties will be handled by Major Series veteran Rob Blasdell, who will be backed up by one of Mike Wye, David Powers or Walter Sousa. The 1998 Major Series season promises to be an exciting one, with a num- ber of changes to the league. Two expansion clubswill join the loop this year. After joining the Durham Rowing Club, those in the competitive classes are out on the water at 6 a.m. five days a week where they will train for one day of racing. They are allowed to take off the day after a regatta, he says. "It's a really busy sea- to Thanksgiving weekend. We only really get two | months off before indoor son; we go right through Busy summer in ithe works for local rowing club training in January and I need time to get the docks out and repair the boats," he said, proudly display- ing a new 60' x 12' dock he built and turned over to the township which will allow both eight-man and four-man sculls to be launched. And, with a strong base of rowers already and more interested, Mr. Millikin says the future for the club looks good. "This will be another good year for us and next year will be a very big year with the 1999 World Rowing Festival (in St. Catharines) and other big events. It looks good for » us. AC * DR. L.
