22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 12, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" R D> PORT PERRY STAR & URAL Roots Hope all mothers en My hope is that all mothers enjoyed a very happy Mother's Day on Sunday. Certainly there were many family gatherings in honor of the special day. At the United Church at the regular morning worship service the Sacrament of Baptism was conducted by Rev. David Shearman when Gabrielle Elizabeth Anderson-Duvall, daughter of Catherine and Carl Anderson Duvall and Janice Lynn Duff, daughter of Jodie and Christopher Duff were received. During the service spe- cial music was provided by both the junior and senior choirs. Rev. Shearman preached a very thought-provoking sermon, "New Visions." Following church Chris and Jodie Duff hosted a family gath- ering in honor of Jamie Lynn's Baptism. Guests were Larry and Coreen Johnstone, Raglan, Ilda Duff, Alice Linstead of Port Perry, Jeff, Wendy, Jordan and Travis Johnstone of Seagrave, Joanne Robin and Owen Popovitch of Port Perry, Alma Duff, Corey and Marilyn Call, Ashley and Morgan of Blackstock. Dorothy and Bob Duvall south of Port Perry hosted a family gathering in honor of their grand- daughter Gabrielle Elizabeth Anderson-Duvall's Baptism. Guests were Carl Anderson, Cathy Anderson-Duvall, Chloe and Gabrielle of Blackstock, Eleanor and Ken Telford of Kirkfield, Darlene Telford, Gloria Quibell and Vern Shier all of Oshawa, Donna Quibell and - Maureen Patton both of Scarborough and Don and Leanne Quibell of Lindsay. Heartiest congratulations to the Cartwright High School Senior Concert Band. This band attended the International Music Festival which was held in Quebec. They played before three international level adjudicators on Saturday and were awarded the Gold. It puts the band in the top 8 per cent of all groups heard by the I.M.F. across North America and the world. To put the importance of this award Blackstock by into perspective, Cartwright High School Bands have attend- ed six International Music Festivals and this is the first time a Gold has been awarded to a concert band. Who says great things can't come from our small high school? To keep his promise to the band, conductor and leader Mr. John Beirness (Mr. B.) shaved his moustache which he has sported for 26 years. Once again heartiest congratulations for such a fabulous achievement. Welcome home to Karen Water who is home after a month vacation in Australia. She visited a friend in Melbourne and then flew up north where she toured joyed their special day the outback, rainforests and spent some time scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef. What a great vacation and learning expe- rience. Nancy Bryans enjoyed lunch with her mom, Babe Brown of Oshawa and another day with her sisters, Virgie Fairey, Michigan and Barb Hane at Hane's Too, the newest adven- ture for Barb and her husband Vic and Traci and Vic Jr. It is Bowmanville's newest Sports Bar on King St. East. There were 13 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Lois Huntington, Sarah Brunton, Gordon Finney, Grace Bassant, Alice Drinkwater, Verna Robinson and Gladys Greenwood. Lucky draws were won by Jean Van Camp, Gary Notenboom (three), Lyle McMahon and Gladys Greenwood. Gerald and Joyce Kelly attended the wedding of Tara Dermott and Kent Petch on Saturday afternoon in Churchill United Church. The reception and dance was held at Fernwood Banquet Hall, Barrie. Blackstock W.I. By Eileen McLaughlin, reporter The May meeting of the Blackstock Women's Institute was held on May 6 with 15 mem- bers present. Vice-president Dora Martyn opened the meeting with the Institute Ode and The Mary Stewart Collect. Carol Thornton, convener of Agriculture was in charge of a most interesting meeting. A sale of plants for Pennies for Friendship followed the program amounting to $41. Donations were made to M.S, the local food bank and Cystic Fibrosis. Ten ladies will go to Solina on May 14 at 6:15 to the District Annual and four members hope to go to Belleville to our 1998 Area Conference in July. Several ladies put on their walking shoes and with Carol Thornton as their leader went for a walk of Blackstock. An answer to Albert's red Highway 7A Last week I asked what these triangle red markers meant on Hwy. 7A and this week I have an answer. Every so many years the department makes a film of the highway in order to protect own- ers of property along the highway and also the department from wrong doing along the road allowance. It could be a building added too close to the road or a culvert installed in the year 2000. A dispute arises and the owner says "that was here in '91 when | purchased the property." The department will review the film and it will tell the true story if it was there in 1998 or not. Most municipalities have films of prop- erty they have jurisdiction over. Pine Ridge Garden Club Don't forget the meeting this Tuesday, May 12 at 8 p.m. in Nestleton Hall. Guest speaker is Lynne Cooper on traditional knot gardens. Everyone welcome. Beautify Caesarea You have no doubt noticed sec- tions of new grass have been cut along the side of the road as you approach our village from the south. I'm also glad to report our new trees are in leaf and appear to be rooting. The Ratepayers Association is very thankful to Mr. Abraham whom again this year is out cut- ting. Also Lorne Shaw and my volunteers from Beautify Scugog Club whom are donating six to 10 hours a week of their time. Give us another month and you'll see the difference. Next project is the gigantic yard sale May 30 at 20 Putsey Drive. Items and help are needed. We want to raise money to install two new signs of a friendlier appearance. Also we will see hydro about us planting some column type of juniper trees along the east side. They grow to a maximum height of six to eight feet. More volunteers are needed. Lions Club We had a very good address triangle question by Dr. W. Rapley last Wednesday about the Metro Zoo. They have 25 to 30 projects a year taking place in an effort to raise funds. He spoke on endangered species and what the zoo and naturalists are doing to protect them. Their operating budget for this year is 23 million dollars. Mr. Earl Cuddie will be Blackstock Lions' guest speaker on May 20. I also visited Camp Kirk last Saturday. Lake Scugog Historical Society The big news this week is the plant and yard sale to be held this Monday, May 18 Victoria Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Island Museum. Joke of the Week A 12-year-old boy became very interested in riding horses and a 17-year-old girl gave him many tips. She asked the boy to aid her in preparing the horse for a show. However when she added how much easier it was going to be having him as her groom, he replied "I'm not going to marry you." Saying of the Week The cinema has no boundary, it 1s a ribbon of dream.
