"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 26, 1998 - 11 College teachers vote 72 % in favor of By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Ontario's 6,500 com- munity college instruec- tors -- including those at nearby Durham College - - are set to strike this fall if talks aimed at their first contract'in two years break down. In a province-wide vote last Thursday 72 per cent of the teachers casting ballots were in favor of a strike if talks between their group, col- lege management reps and a provincial mediator fail. Peter McKeracher, head of the bargaining unit for Durham College, says that the strike man- date will make talks with college management teams much easier. "It is very gratifying for us to get this show of confidence from our mem- bers," he said. Mr. McKeracher said that college instructors Parkwood plant sale coming up The public is invited to a spring benefit event - the Parkwood Plant and Yard Sale, Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30. Sale times are Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or until there's nothing left. The sale is presented by the Parkwood volun- teers, with proceeds toward conservation projects at the estate. Whether conducting - tours, tending flowerbeds or staging events, volunteers work tirelessly to raise funds and generate awareness for Parkwood, to enhance public use and enjoyment of the man- sion. Serious gardeners may dlso "plant a piece of history" with peren- nials divided from Parkwood garden stock. Mr. McKeracher said Job security and pay issues are at the top of the teachers' list. "We want what has been traditionally ours," he said. "A rate of pay that places us in between high school and universi- ty instructors, and firm Job security with protec- tion against what we see as possibly unqualified instructors taking our places in the classroom." The two sides have strike if talks fail until the fall to come to an agreement. But with Ontario colleges facing cuts of 15 per cent to their overall funding, an agree- ment 1s by no means a certainty. Talks are set to start again on June 15. EVEN THE PRICE WON'T LET YOU DOWN.
