Scugog rejected offers to use the material -- which some critics say could contain pollutants including furans and dioxins -- when it first became available, and has steadfastly stuck by that decision, says roads superintendent Ronn McDonald. "The council here has opted to stay away from it," said Mr. McDonald, who first made the rec- ommendation to reject the material -- a byprod- uct of the Norampac pulp and paper mill in Trenton - when it was being offered by the company a few years ago. The company offers the material for free, but municipalities must pay to truck it. The Trenton plant used to dump the waste prod- uct into the Trent River, but has been prohibited from doing so any more. Many municipalities took them up on the offer, eager to save money on costs for calcium chloride, the material widely used on country roads. "They came to me two or three years ago and asked if we were inter- ested in spraying it," said Mr. McDonald. He carried out some research on the product, and found it was not rec- ommended for use within 50 metres of any water- course: "That sort of set off some red flags for me," said Mr. McDonald. "I was really nervous about it." He went to council and recommended against using dombind, and the politicians agreed. Scugog stuck with calcium chlo- ride. The township has budgeted $120,000 for use of the material on our rural roads this year. "I went to council and said if you can't spray it by water, there's a prob- lem with it," said Mr. McDonald. Other area municipali- ties took up Norampac's offer, though! Uxbridge and Manvers Townships have since abandoned Dombind, however. Meanwhile, Brock Township council is stick- ing by its use of the mate- rial, over the objections of groups like the Brock Land Stewards, and other environmentalists. The council, fighting costs and wrestling right now with d not in use in Scugog: McDonald a tax increase that could be as high as 18 per cent, has voted to use Dombind for another season. Taking up the fight last week was the World Wildlife Fund of Canada, which claimed Dombind could release a number of materials that could prove toxic in the envi- ronment. Meanwhile, Norampac officials contend the material is safe. They're holding an open house at the Sunderland Town Hall Thursday (May 28) to provide more informa- tion.
