EE EEE "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1998 - 9 McArthur in court as dangerous offender process continues By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Another part of the Crown's continuing effort to have convicted Port Perry bank robber Mitchiel (Mickey) McArthur declared a dan- gerous offender was played out in a Whitby courthouse Friday. Mr. Justice Harry LaForme presided over the session to hear the status of a psychiatric report being compiled on McArthur. That report will be used along with other evidence in the Crown Attorney's attempt to have the man declared a dan- gerous offender and sen- tenced to an indefinite jail term. McArthur was convict- ed last spring in the 1994 robbery of the Bank of Montreal in the Port Perry Plaza. Three police officers and two civilians were wounded when the bandits opened fire during and after the stick-up. McArthur's brother Angus was acquitted of the same robbery and released. No one has since been charged as the second gunman in the robbery. The $50,000 stolen in the robbery was never recov- ered. Last week McArthur and his new lawyer Gregory LaFontaine heard that the psychiatric report was expected to be in the hands of the Attorney Generals office shorty, and that McArthur was remanded until Friday (June 5) for a further appearance. Mr. Justice LaForme set July 31 as the date he expects to be able to either announce a date for a dan- gerous offender hearing to begin, or, set a date for McArthur to be sentenced for the robbery and shoot- ings that electrified this small community. If the Crown's danger- ous offender bid is suc- cessful, the man could be imprisoned indefinitely. McArthur was brought to the court house under tight security with shack- les and belt restraints, guarded by members of Durham Polices' elite Tactical Support Unit from his cell in Millbrook Correctional Institute. EEE EAN DERRRO RON Security was extremely tight when convicted bank robber Mitchiel McArthur made an appearance in court in Whitby Friday. Officials are awaiting the release of a psychiatric report, which will be used to determine whether or not a hearing dangerous offender designation against him can proceed. Sarat i ONLY?
