"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1998 - 11 JEFF MITCHELU/PORT PERRY STAR TEACHER'S THE TOPS: Marie Bekessy, a Grade 7 teacher at Immaculate Conception Separate School, has been named a Distinguished Catholic Educator by the Durham Catholic District School Board. Ms Bekessy, a teacher for nine years, has been at the Port Perry school for three. In addition to her regular duties, she is part of a group of teachers who are responsible for producing the school's musical every other year; this year they hit the stage with Oliver Twist, and two years ago they put on the Wizard of Oz. She was nominated by her peers at the school. Scugog man is Durham Educator of the Year By Chris Hall Port Perry Star When he leaves the Durham public school system for York University this fall, Brian Jones will have plenty of mem- ories to take with him. Recently awarded the Educator of the Year award by the Ontario Public Schools Teachers' Federation (OPSTF), the Greenbank resident will say farewell to the public school system for the next three years as he makes his way to York's Durham Campus to teach in the Faculty of Education department. After spending most of his career teach- ing Junior and Senior Kindergarten in the Durham education system, the Trent and Queen's University graduate says that he was taken aback by the award. "It was just overwhelming to be pre- sented with this," said Mr. Jones. "It's the parents of the students you work with that nominate you for the award. Parents of both past and present students were the ones that submitted the applications." Mr. Jones was informed of the honor at a staff meeting, and was presented it at an April 24 breakfast to kick off last month's Education Week. He said the award also goes out to his colleagues at Brooklin's Meadowcrest Public School, who all play a large part in the childrens' education. "They're just an incredible staff to work with there," he said. "There is a fantastic principal and I get great support from everyone on all the initiatives I do." While his years working at schools in Greenbank, Pickering, Meadowcrest and at the board office as a consultant facilita- tor have been enjoyable, Mr. Jones says that the the three-year hiatus at York will be a welcome change. "I'm very excit- ed about working in the post-sec- ondary area. I'm sort of on loan to 3 York for three years, and I think it is great to get new blood in their classrooms. "They wanted someone who has experi- ence in the classroom and I'm glad I was given the opportunity." He will be instruct- ing 84 students and guiding them into the education world. Mr. Jones said that in addition to the award, the last few weeks have been even better because of the addition of his family's second child, a daughter, who was born April 21. "This has truly been a time to remember. A new daughter, a new job, and an award," he said, noting that he has also been shortlisted as one of the provinces top 50 teachers in a Toronto Sun poll. "The last little while has just been incredible for me. With the award, the nomination from the parents is just great," said Mr. Jones. "It's nice when your colleagues nominate you, but they see you everyday. When a parent does something like that and they notice your work in their child, then that's something special." Brian Jones "WHEN THE HEAT'S ON, | DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MY CAR BLOWING ITS COOL." "My mechanic tells me that when the temperature outside goes up, the temperature under my hood really climbs, too. So I know my cooling system better be ready to deal with it. Summer driving and air conditioning put a big strain on my engine. I have my mechanic look things over at the beginning of the summer, and then I don't have to worry about it."
