Continuing with a tradition which began in the summer of 1928, organizers are once again planning numerous water and track events as part of a weekend of fun and relaxation for residents and vis- itors alike. While friction between some executive members threatened to end the tradition last year -- at one point the regatta was declared dead -- it was revived last sum- mer as the "Festival of Sports". The only interruptions for the event were in 1942 and 1943 when it was can- celled during local World War II efforts. This year a new executive has stepped forward to lead the way, and, to the relief of some long-time organizers, the tradition will continue. Claiming that they don't want to see the regatta die, three former members will lend a hand to president Tom Hamar; secretary/treasurer Anita Sherwin Hamar, and sports directors Gary Rogers OPEN FRIDAYS TO 9PM Small {o) K HM IVERSIP LH oD OR Allis Captain Ben's Specials and DAD: for too! 241 Queen St. Port Perry » 985-1965 Caesarea and Nancy Durocher in getting the Aug. 1 to 3 event off the ground and making it a success. To kick off the Lake Scugog Regatta Association's 70th birthday, a gala parade will make its way through the streets of Caesarea on Aug. 1 before giv- ing way to numerous track and field and water events which will provide hours of enjoyment for the children. Other activities, such as horseshoes and volleyball, will be available for adults. Other popular attractions including the watermelon-eating and nail-driving contests will continue in Putsey Park. The fun is open to everyone and trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in each event. The regatta will continue to be a non- profit venture, with the majority of the money raised for the games coming from community donations and a draw. And, with approximately 30 children entering in each event, organizers are expecting a need for about 30 volunteers over the course of the weekend.
