"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1998 - 23 Township, fair board at odds over pipe By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star A skirmish is develop- ing over whether the parks and recreation department should be paying to correct a drainage problem at the Port Perry Fairgrounds. Committee chairman Ken Carruthers said Monday he is upset over an invoice for just over $1,000 for "O" pipe to be installed at the fair- grounds. It will cost another $500 in labor to get the pipe in the ground. Councillor Carruthers said the Fairgrounds has never been a responsibili- ty of the parks and rec committee and the money for the O pipe should come from the fair board or per- haps the township roads department. The pipe is needed to carry away water that is eroding the rear yards of three private properties that abut the fairgrounds. The decision to use the pipe to correct a drainage problem was made follow- ing an inspection by fair board rep Bill Cohoon, township roads chief Ronn MacDonald and Ward 5 Councillor Gary Mahony. Councillor Mahony said the fair board posi- tion is that since the prob- lem is on municipal prop- erty, it is up to the township to pay for clear- ing it up. Councillor Carruthers ED a n d Mayor Doug Moffatt said they are not question- ing the decision that cor- rective Carruthers tion is needed, but rather who gets stuck with the bill. "If there is some hint that the fairgrounds should come under parks and rec department (juris- diction) that would be a serious decision that needs a lot of discussion," said the mayor. Councillor Ken Gadsden said he is con- cerned the pipe was ordered at the end of April, delivered a week later and it still has not been installed. He wants a staff repo on who should pay for th before the company is paid for supplying the pipe.
