26- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Al Their performance will begin at 9 a.m. Members of CHS' golden play this Sunday band will St. John's News By Colin Beal Father Hugh and all of us at St. John's were hor- rified to learn of the disas- trous fire at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Port Perry on Sunday morning. We know the importance of the place of worship in the lives of all of us and we realize what a great sense of loss Father Charlie and his parishioners are feel- ing; we pray for them and we pray too that it will not be long before they will be 1 able to rejoice in a rebuilt church. Father Hugh and Peggy were guests at a Blackstock Guiding Event last week. This was the occasion at which badges were pre- sented, Sparks moved up to Brownies, Brownies flew up to Guides and some Guides became Pathfinders. Hugh was particularly pleased to see several younger members of St. John's recognized during the celebrations, Jessie Bongard and Natasha Edgerton moved from Sparks to Brownies, Shannon Bongard advanced from Brownies to become a Guide and Nicole Beechey and Kelly King are now Pathfinders. In addition Nicole and Natalie Beechey have com- pleted Stage 2 of the Religion and Life Badge. Congratulations to all. Congratulations as well to Nancy Bongard who, as a member of the Borelians, shared in their success at the Theatre Ontario '98 Festival held in Owen Sound. We hear that they won just about every award. And also to Ruth Welham-Umphrey and Natasha Edgerton whose birthdays were given musi- cal honors at Coffee Time after Sunday's service. Next Sunday morning (June 7) a group of young musicians from Cartwright High School's Gold Medal winning Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. John Beirness, will play before and during the Sunday Eucharist. The band will start playing at 9 a.m. Other upcoming events at St. John's include the annual Rogation Service which will be held, this year, on June 14 at the home of John and Carol Hendry, and The Parish Patronal Feast of St. John the Baptist which will be celebrated on June 27. Church School Certificates will be presented and the service will be followed by a picnic and games for the children. Iris Show set for June 15 I understand there was a good turnout at the Brooklin Horticulture meeting last Wednesday night and a very good show in spite of the fact that the tulips and lilacs had past their bloom period. Special awards were given to Mary Wonnacott for her best dec- orative; Norma Ingleton took the top prize for best house plant; and best African violet in show was won by Ronna Stanley. Congratulations to these ladies. Also the speaker Jim Kamstra was well received and enjoyed by all as he spoke about attract- ing birds and butterflies and the Oak Ridges Moraine. The iris show and gen- eral meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 15 to be Florence Ashton held at Burns Church, . Ashburn. As you know the iris are now in full bloom. However, there will be a show which includes "other specimens" and decorative class. Elizabeth Forester will address the subject on "Growing and Using Herbs."
