By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star For 30 years the ladies of the Friendly Visitors Club in Port Perry have been entertaining and maintain- ing friendships with people with special needs. The club was formed in 1968 when Mrs. M. B. Dymond, Director of the Ontario County Mental Health Association, asked if a volunteer group could be formed to provide social activities and entertainment for residents of homes for special care in the communi- ty. That's when Mildred Hope, Helen Jewell, Mary Williamson, Lita Doupe and Joy Newham formed the Friendly Visitors Club. Although Mrs. Doupe passed away a few years ago and Mrs. Newham has since moved away from the area, the rest of the ladies continue to enjoy recreation and friendship twice a month with as many as 20 people. Request for their services began in the late 60s. The first party was held at Christmas 1968 where clients enjoyed music, games, visits gifts. "There wasn't any enter- tainment or hobbies for the residents to do until we start- ed," Mrs. Hope said. In the beginning the women visited the clients at their homes. "We'd play games, like Chinese checkers and cards, and always took a lunch," said Mrs. Hope. When they ceased going to the homes, they began holding special events at the Prince Albert Hall. Here, the women would cook din- ners for everyone, help the residents make crafts for special occasions, and play bingo and other games. Clients from outside the community are also included in the activities. Zella Lee from Cannington and Harold Parson from a residence on Ella St. have been partici- pating for the most number of years. Sebert Henry, operator of the home on Ella St. feels the women provide wonder- ful afternoons for his clients. "They are number one," he said. "The residents love them very much and feel they're wanted in the com- munity." Now the Friendly Visitors provide afternoons of enter- tainment twice a month at the Prince Albert Hall. Often, residents from Cannington, Uxbridge and Sunderland join in on the fun as well. The women take turns supplying lufjch and if | there's a birthday to cele- brate a decorative cake is always a must. Once a year Mrs. Hope, Mrs. Jewell, Mrs. Williamson -- and a group of volunteers including Helen Wozney, Norma Geer, Marlene Blain and Kay Wilson -- take the clients out to lunch. Recently everyone enjoyed their out- ing at the Starlite Diner. "When they go out for lunch, they feel really special when they-order off the menu," Mrs. Williamson said. In the beginning all expenses came out of the ladies' pockets, but now they raffle off a quilt every year and hold an annual flea mar- ket to raise funds. This year's sale was one of the best they've ever had. "We made well over the amount needed to cover expenses for the year," Mrs. Hope said. As with many volunteer organizations, it's difficult getting people to help. ~ "Unfortunately, as soon as they hear it's people with special needs they will be helping, they don't bother to inquire further," said Mrs. Williamson. If anyone would like to bring a little sunshine into the lives of these people with special needs, call Mrs. Williamson at 985-7845. The Friendly Visitors still have the same motto they started with 30 years ago: "Scatter a little sunshine ....today."
