INN SHCA eau So FER LRN pd "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" _r PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 16, 1998 - 13 Return to Port Perry a homecoming for Jim By Chris Hall Port Perry Star When you see him laughing and joking with his staff and customers, it's as if Jim Lawrence had never left town. Five years after moving to Parry Sound for what he described as a "slow-down leading to retirement", Mr. Lawrence is back in Port Perry and as busy as ever, operating the Durham Pharmacy in the Medical Associates building. A part owner in the pharmacy since its opening more than 20 years ago, he says everything just seems to have paved the way for his return to Scugog. "The partners had been asking me to come and work here for the last 15 years and I looked at what was going on in Parry Sound, and what my choices were... well, it just seemed like the right time to come back to Port Perry. We wanted to come home," he said last week. Mr. Lawrence said it was an easy deci- sion to return with his wife Margaret to the Port Perry area, where they had spent many years running one of the more pop- ular drug stores in Scugog. "I worked for Lovell Drugs in Oshawa and 'Bowmanville for awhile," the University of Saskatchewan graduate said. "And then we bought the IDA drug store on Queen St. from Stan Bruton in 1974. From there it was a family business until 1993, when Big V Pharmacy bought out the IDA stores." At that point it was time to contemplate retirement, said Mr. Lawrence, 55. "We thought it was time to slow down and take a step towards retirement," he said. "So we moved to Parry Sound because I wanted to play hockey with Bobby Orr, but he was gone." In Parry Sound Mr. Lawrence worked as a pharmacist at a Big V store until the chain was bought by Shopper's Drug Mart. "When that changed, we decided to move on again and I had that offer at the Durham Pharmacy and we took it," said Mr. Lawrence. "My wife and I are boaters and we really enjoyed Georgian Bay but we've moved back here because it's a place we really enjoyed in the past." Mr. Lawrence said he's noticed since his return to work on June 1 that people After five years away, Jim Lawrence is happy to be back at work at the pharmacy in the Port Perry Medical Associates building. He started work last week. are treating him as if he never left five years ago. "I feel very comfortable... like I never left," he said. "People keep dropping by and saying hi and others are giving me a quizzical look like they've seen me before. It defi- nitely feels like home."
