"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 16, 1998 - 17 Council looking for money for Cawker Creek sidewalk Residents of Cawker Creek could have a new sidewalk leading to down- town Port Perry in the near future, if Scugog council can find the money to build it. Cawker Creek resident Ivan Arbour told the works committee Monday morn- ing, that people who live in that area of Port Perry have to fight their way over snowbanks in the winter and are at a safety risk because there is no sidewalk along the west side of Simcoe St. from Riverview to Reach Rd. "It's a dead loss for peo- ple trying to navigate their way over the snowbanks," he said, adding that it is also' 'potentially deadly" because people now have to walk so close to busy Simcoe St. where east- bound traffic is slowing and westbound is speeding up between Riverview and Reach Road. Mr. Arbour, who moved to the area in March, 1997 to retire, said one of the main reasons he and his wife chose this area to live is their enjoyment of walk- ing. But they were dis- mayed to find there is no sidewalk to the downtown area of Port Perry. He presented a petition signed by most Cawker Creek residents who feel the same way he does. He said it is the only arterial road in Port Perry that does not have a side- walk. Councillors were told that area is designated for a sidewalk in three years, but members agreed to see if there is some way they can free the $5,000 from reserve accounts which would allow the township to put the sidewalk in this sum- mer. per sq. "There is no dispute mechanism," said Councillor Dietlein, suggesting that if Toronto politicians decide to ship garbage to a landfill in Scugog, it would be a fait accompli. "With 51 per cent of the vote, it's easy enough for them to solve their (garbage) problem on our backs," Councillor Dietlein told the Star. And he noted that in two fairly recent studies of landfill locations, Scugog Township was the area for several "preferred sites." The Ward 4 rep raised the issue of landfill sites in Scugog as councillors discussed what plan of action Scugog should take against the Tonks recommendations for a new GTSB. "All of this is pretty scary. it's nothing more than a much larger form of regional government," said Mayor Doug Moffatt of the Tonks recommendations to Al Leach of the provincial cabinet. The mayor said if those recommendations end up in legislation form this summer, Scugog may have virtually no time to mount any kind of effective objection to being included in the GTSB. If the legislation is stalled until this fall, there may be a longer window of opportunity for Scugog, he sug- gested. The mayor wants to get the public involved in the debate immediately, and suggested a public meeting in the near future. Other councillors said Scugog should spell out clearly the alternative to membership in the GTSB before a public meeting is called, so that there is something on the table at such a meeting. rd) a] gs FOOD PLUS While Supplies Last!
