"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 23, 1998 - 5 Strike continues, sends more GM workers home By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The strike by General Motors employ- ees in Michigan has entered its third week and resulted in the layoff of more workers here, bringing the total number to more than 10,000 across Ontario and Quebec. GM spokesman Stew Low said yes- terday that strikes at two Flint, Michigan parts plants have affected three more Oshawa-area operations. "From an Oshawa standpoint we're pretty much the same as last week," he said Monday morning. "We've sent a few more people home, which leaves both car plants shut down." At the No. 1 car plant in Oshawa, which produces Luminas and Monte Carlos, an additional 200 workers have been sent home, bringing the total num- ber to 2,450. The majority of the employ- ees that were told not to report to work yesterday were doing training at the facility, says Mr. Low. Another 100 employees were sent home from the second car plant, which manufactures Buick Centuries and Regals. This raises the number of employees there sent home to 2,650. The U.S. strikes have affected opera- tions at three Oshawa supplementary plants, with 235 of 429 employees sent home at the stamping plant which pro- duces most exterior body panels for both car plants and sheet metal for the Oshawa truck plant. The Delphi chassis plant, which manufactures suspensions for the Oshawa car plants, has also temporarily laid off 180 people. In addition, the battery plant in Oshawa is affected. But that plant sup- plies half its products to other compa- nies, so some work will continue there. A partial shutdown has also been imposed at the St. Therese, Quebec plant that manufactures Camaros and Firebirds, said Mr. Low. Approximately 800 workers have been sent home. About 650 employees at a St. Catharines parts plant were sent home last week and have not reported back to work since. Throughout the ordeal the GM truck plant in Oshawa, which will produce the 1999 full-size extended cab models, 1s still fully staffed and "should be fine for some time" said Mr. Low. While declining to give an estimate of income losses, Mr. Low confirmed that cars produced in Oshawa retail for an average of $25,000. Over the last two weeks, up to and including last Friday, the Oshawa GM plants would have manufactured around 14,000 cars, he said. That's a loss of $350 million. Talks are ongoing at the two Michigan plants, but hit a rough spot over the weekend when the two sides walked out on negotiations. Just over 9,000 employees at the two U.S. plants walked off the job to protest plans by the company to cut the number of jobs there. The stoppage of work at the Michigan plants, which produce engine cradles and other electrical parts, have affected work at all North American GM production plants. : r effective July 3, 1998 tn association with OF PORT PERRY 462 Paxton Street DR. Council gives patio the green light ~Scugog councillors have given the green light to an outdoor patio licence in front of the Parkside Bar and Grill on only during the summer months, and from 11 in the morning until its 2 a.m. "closing time. He said that even though the proposed patio will mean elimination of three parking spots in front of the donut shop and restaurant on the corner of Mary St., there is sufficient parking elsewhere on his property to make up for the loss. : : ~ Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers _ solidly endorsed the request for the out- door patio, saying this is "an excellent proposition for an area that needs some (economic) stimulation."
