"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1998 - 9 By Chris Hall Dan Robert takes on new post in Nova Scotia Museum curators moving on Port Perry Star When Dan Robert closes the door to the Scugog Shores Museum behind him for the last time on July 24, he will take many memories with him. After four years of man- aging the local museum, Mr. Robert is off to Nova Scotia where he has landed what he describes "a job as pretty close to my dream one as I think I can get". Mr. Robert, 30, will take over the reins at the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry in Stellarton. It's a move he describes as the next step in his career. "I've had a wonderful time here, and it has been a great learning experience for me. I was fortunate to - get the job here at the time I did and I have really enjoyed the years I have worked here," he said Thursday as his summer students readied the muse- um for the upcoming day camps. "I had just gotten out of school when I took this job," Mr. Robert said. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Western University and got his MA in anthropology and arche- ology at Trent University in Peterborough. He learned June 16 he had been hired in Nova Scotia. He starts his new job on Aug. 10. "l wanted a change; something more within my education. There, my job is more defined. I will be look- ing after the collections and the artifacts; pretty much half of what I do here, but there is a bigger collec- tion there. I will be respon- sible for the industrial archeology in the province. "This job is more stable and it is in the provincial museum structure; it's the Skating classes coming up St. John Ambulance has got a great new class for both youth and adults who are looking to develop or improve their Inline Skating skills. The certificate pro- gram is delivered with theoretical and practical content. Learn such skills as basic and backward skating, stopping, turn- ing, and crossovers. The program is hosted by the Kids Safety Village, in partnership with Canroll Canada. The Inline class is endorsed by the Durham Regional Police, the town of Whitby, and St. John Ambulance. Mr. Robert said his fam- ily -- wife Susan and chil- dren Lucy and Oliver -- is looking forward to the change in their lives. "Everyone's really excit- ed about the move. We wait- ed for the kids to finish school and now we're off," he said. "Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Ontario were the three provinces I select- ed as where I wanted to work, but I'm glad it's the east coast where I'm going. "The province there real- ly looks after its historical and cultural sites. They put money into them because they know that's what attracts tourists; Ontario can learn a lot from them."
