PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1998 - 11 Music in the Park back for summer By Alex Ingram The Music in Palmer Park series began on Sunday, June 28 with the Swing Tyme Melodies live band. This group plays every Friday evening for dinner dancing in the Admiral Inn in Lindsay, and the performers are experi- enced and talented at playing the music which we enjoyed so much in our younger dancing days. The concerts in the park begin at 7 p.m. Bring a chair and/or a blanket and the family and friends. We must thank those who supported this project in the past and also the new council which is providing support this year. The entertainers for July are: July 5 - Swing Tyme Melodies, Dixieland Band. July 12 - Clarington Concert Band, Barry Hodgins conducting. July 19 - Jeremy Smith & the Driftwood Players performing Shakespeare's "Hamlet." July 26 - Ken Howard's Jazz Trio with tenor sax, piano and guitar. Be on time and don't miss these great shows. CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR THE JOY OF CANDLES: Diane and Robert Stebenson, along with son David, have recently opened up one of Port Perry's newest stores, The Joy of Candles. The family-run store features a line of hand-made candles which are actually crafted in the store, located at 221 Queen St. There are plenty of dif- ferent colors and sizes of candles to pick from, as well as accessories. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Let's celebrate! Scugog's all set to celebrate Canada Day in style again this year Bring your flags, your voices and your Canadian spirit to Palmer Park on the shores of Lake Scugog to celebrate Canada's birthday tomorrow. Wednesday at 12:45 the birthday party will begin with the announcement of The Port Perry Star's Scugog Citizen of the Year, Heather Haliburton-Smith, at the Gazebo on the lakefront in Port Rerry. Port Perry's own 'Bird House Willie', Bill Barr, will be MC for the event, and there will be plenty of food and music to entertain. At 1 p.m. Durham Alex Shepherd invites all to re-affirm their citizenship in front of citizenship judge Clare Westcott. It's a great chance for native-born Canadians to take the oath of citizenship that new Canadians swear to their country of choice. The music and fun will continue all afternoon, so bring your blankets and lawn chairs. The Chamber of Commerce along with much appreciated help from the Township of Scugog, Alex Shepherd, M&M Meats and the BIA, will again be presenting a major show of pyrotechnics in the evening. The popular annual fireworks show will get under way at dusk, and the Port Perry waterfront will blaze with Scugog's own symphony of fire. If you see a fire fighter, thank him -- they give up free time to oversee the display so you can enjoy it. And don't forget to drop your cash in the buckets that will be passed around. The funds pay for the fireworks display each year, and the Chamber counts on your support to continue what has become a Canadian love-fest each year in Port Perry. A 54-year-old Markham man died Sunday after a tractor he was working on in the Uxbridge area tipped over, pinning him to the ground, police say. Rocco Jesualdo was working on his farm, located on the Uxbridge- Pickering Town Line, sometime around 1:45 p.m on June 28 with his father- in-law, say police. While the man lived in Markham, he also owned and operated the farm when not working as a self-employed contractor. Police say at the time of the accident, Mr. Jesualdo was driving a Ford 1500 tractor near the rear of two small chicken barns removing manure. He made his way from the back of the barns to the front where he was dump- ing the chicken droppings. At the time, say police, a number of trips had been made and the trail he had made going up the hills was getting soft. On his last trip the tractor slipped Man dies as tractor rolls over sideways and rolled down the hill, pin- ning the man under a fender and lights. Uxbridge and Stouffville firefighters responded to the accident and attempt- ed to treat Mr. Jesualdo for head injuries but he was pronounced dead at the scene by Oshawa-area coroner Dr. Swain. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed yesterday (June 29). Vandals hit school Vandals struck Cartwright High School recently and caused more than $2,000 damage when they lit some bins on fire. Durham Regional Police say that sometime overnight between June 26 and 27, vandals emptied garbage and recycling bins of their refuse against the southeast corner of the school and lit it on fire. They bins were badly burnt and the brick walls and windows nearby received extensive smoke damage. Port Perry & Prince Albert UNITED CHURCHES Minister: Rev. Robert J.
