By Colin Beal St. John's 168th birthday party was a great success. It started off with the Sunday Choral Eucharist which included special prayers and references to our Patron, Saint John the Baptist. During the service the children of the Church School received their certificates of completion of their course of study. Later, two Altar Servers, Matt Campbell and Christopher Willis, received their medallions after having served a one year probationary period. Hymns, appro- priate to the Feast were sung and the choir sang an anthem. During coffee time, after the service, musical greetings were sung for five parishioners: Norma Wolfe, Marion Hodge, Fred King, Andrew Black and Stephen Kubovic have all either celebrated; or will celebrate birth- days at this time of the year. The Feasting, which followed coffee time, was hosted by the children of the Church School assisted by George and Heather Kubovic and Nancy and Reid Bongard. The menu included a choice of small or large hot dogs or hamburgers Looking for old photos of Port Perry At the Star, we are constantly on the lookout for interesting old photographs to feature in our Remember When column... and once again we are running low on good quality pictures. (or any combination thereof) and salads. Dessert was a magnificent iced cake dec- orated with lots of fresh berries. Lots of cool refreshing drinks were served as well as coffee and tea for those of mature years. Our thanks to the children and also to their adult helpers. dominated by the children. They started with an obstacle course which intimidat- ed all the adults present especially when we saw some of the times which the youngsters were recording. Matt Campbell finally triumphed in this event despite being attacked with water bombs by the other competitors during his final run. For the rest of the afternoon the contests were sack races, three legged races and all those other events which are the real stuff of summer games. Last Thursday's memorable storm was made even more memorable for the Kubovic family when George's mother, Mary Kubovic, was struck by lightning. Mary, who lives just north of Lindsay near Snug Harbour, was holding a metal door knob when the bolt struck. George's dad was standing beside her and saw blue flames flicker up her arm from the door knob; she fell to the ground 'and he rushed her off to hospital. Fortunately, Mary seems not to have suffered any permanent harm...but she was quite shaken.
