2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1998 Laid off GM workers await talks By Chris Hall Port Perry Star While more talks were scheduled to be held yes- terday between General Motors and striking work- ers in Michigan, all North American operations were shut down. GM spokesperson M-M meat shops 7 pv: a; =X ® /. & \ / S re Charles McGregor said dis- cussions were to be held in Flint, while thousands of GM employees enjoy their annual two-week summer break. "There is no change; everything is exactly as it was before. All I know is that talks were planned for today in the U.S.," Mr. McGregor said Monday morning. "Right now, and for the next two weeks, nobody is working. There may be some salary personnel there but production has stopped everywhere in North America." The small number of employees not affected by the strike, including those at the Oshawa truck plant, are scheduled to return to work July 13, he said. Both car plants in Oshawa have been shut down for almost three weeks now. The No. 1 plant produces Luminas and Monte Carlos while the No. 2 plant man- ufactures Buick Regals and Centuries. Mr. McGregor said GM's retail sales are still strong, despite the layoff of more than 10,000 employees in 'Ontario and Quebec. "There is a very strong inventory on the lots, deal- ers are still quite happy to see potential customers," he said, adding that there is no foreseeable problem of running out of GM vehi- cles. "Nope. Not yet anyway." The strike has suspend- ed work at both Oshawa- area GM car plants, send- ing a total of 5,100 workers home. An additional 414 people are on layoff at two Oshawa stamping and com- ponent plants as well. Almost 2,500 employees have been sent home at two St. Catharines parts plants and 1,380 people are home from a Windsor plant. Suspended production at the St. Therese, Quebec plant has left more than 1,200 people laid off. Fencing stolen from home Durham Regional Police were called to the View Lake area last week after a Washago Bay Lane resident reported that approximately $700 in fencing was stolen from his property. Police say two 250- pound bundles of Lundy farm fence was stolen when thieves backed a truck up to the property and loaded it. The incident occurred sometime between June 1 to 22, say police. i ns CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR ON THE FLIPPER: Mark Pollard officially took over as owner of Port Perry's M&M Meat Shops on June 8, after four years at the Ajax store.
