8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Conditions were approaching drought Rain arrives at last to soak parched fields By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Last week's torrential rains have managed to clear up near-drought con- ditions in most parts of the area, but some pockets are still in dire need need of moisture. Neil Moore, an official with Port Perry's Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs office, said showers which began last Thursday evening and carried over to Sunday night have pro- vided a welcome boost for local crops. Approximately 15mm fell in the Oshawa area, while up to five inches of rain hit Sunderland dur- ing the period. "It fell really hard in most areas but some pock- ets didn't get hit with much, if at all," said Mr. Moore. "Greenbank got hardly any rain which fell steady through Thursday night. It was an excellent rain, but there's no need for five inches, between 25 and 50mm 1s much bet ter... 1t soaks in better. But, we'll take what we can get." In a season with unsea- sonably high tempera- tures and a lack of mois- ture, Mr. Moore says that arain storm like that is most welcome. "It's been so hot and dry for so long and recently the rain has started to fall more and more. Now, with this rain we finally have most of the moisture we need for almost all local crops." Until the recent rain- fall, crops have been suf- fering from the lack of moisture, said Mr. Moore. "Some have wilted JIM LAWRENCE Pharmacist-Manager (OUNCEMENT GOOD NEWS Durham Pharmacy is pleased to welcome Jim Lawrence back to Port Perry as Pharmacist Manager. It could eventually hurt the potential yield of crops like corn and spring prams," Mr. Moore said, noting that winter grains are ripening faster than they should, The heat has been one of the best surprises for arca farmers this year. "Last year was so cold for so long and now we got the heat that we need. It's kind of nice and it's no big problem when it gets around 30 degrees." Problems arise, howev- er, when temperatures rise above that. At 32 or 33 degrees, the crop can't get moisture quickly enough and the heat becomes a detriment to the growth.
