"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1998 - 23 R Roots Earle Trewin put on quite a show at the truck, tractor pull : by The annual Tractor and Truck Pull on Friday and Saturday evenings was another great suc- cess. The rains on Saturday cre- ated some track problems and many concerns during the after- noon but all turned out very well. Earle Trewin on his heavy class Pro-stock tractor certainly thrilled the audience with his spectacular final pull on late Saturday evening. Muriel Wotten, Eileen McLaughlin, Edith McLaughlin, Dora Martyn and Lillian Lockyer spent the weekend in Belleville attending the "Women's Institute: Conference '98." The theme was "Today's Family Shaping Tomorrow's Future." They report a very impressive conference. Best wishes are extended to Rev. Doreen Van Camp who retired from the United Church Ministry at the end of June. She has returned to live in her home on Highway 7A. "On Thursday, July 9 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. is the second annual "Peeping Tom" Barbecue spon- sored by the Manse Committee at the manse, home of Carol and David Shearman. Donations will be accepted to the Window Fund. All are welcome. Bride-to-be Jill Van Camp has returned home from Bermuda until her wedding at the end of July. A "Come and Go Evening" to honor Jill at the United Church this Friday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m. Men, women and children are welcome. At the United Church Sunday morning service the sacrament of baptism was held when Anthony Flint Sewards, son of Nancy and Curtis Sewards was received. Pauline Langmaid sang a beautiful solo during the ser- vice. The title of Rev. David Shearman's thought-provoking message was "We Who Are Under Orders." Best wishes are extended to Louise Swain who celebrated her special birthday with a sur- prise party held by their friends and family at Nestleton Hall recently. Harvey and Joan Graham spent a week in the Calgary where Harvey attended a Conference re beef industry. They attended the Calgary Stampede before returning home on Friday. Helen and Stuart Dorrell are entertaining their family. Lisa and Steve Tufts and family of Elgin, Manitoba, Annie Dorrell of New Liskeard and Brittany and Bryan Dorrell, children of Darcy and Laura Dorrell of Charlton are all with Helen and Stuart. Melody and Wilson Rodman and boys of Little Britain also joined the family gathering. There were 13 tables at the weekly card party with the fol- lowing winners: Ruby Smith with a high score of 110, Verna Draper, Doris Hill, Harry Hill, Verna Robinson, Richard Potter and Charlie Stapleton. Lucky draws were won by Milt Lacey (two), Elsie Pogue, Charlie Stapleton and Irene Hoffman. . News from St. John's Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Frank Staniland, a member of St. John's whose funeral was from here on Wednesday. The luncheon fol- lowed the service in the Parish Hall. On Saturday a lovely wedding was held for Gordon Bentley and Trisha Hamilton with Father Hugh Kernohan officiating. Congratulations. Sunday morning the Sunday School sang "This Is The Day That The Lord Has Made," when | they joined the congregation for communion. It was nice to see Hugh and Peggy's grandchildren with them. Get well wishes are sent to Eldon Fec, who we understand is not feeling very well. There were no birthdays this week, but we congratulate George and Heather Kubovic on their wedding anniversary on Saturday. There will be mid-week Eucharist on July 7 at 7 p.m. A large crowd was on hand for the museum's Tribute Day Blackstock Lions Club We had a great two nights at the Tractor and Truck Pull in Blackstock on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night was great but Saturday night after the rain caused the track to be a sea of mud. But with patience the crowd and the ingenuity of the principals they finally got the track compressed enough to hold the competi- tion. We were busy with our hot dogs and Lion Burgers sales along with the pop. We thank all those who purchased from the Lions booth as our profit goes out to charity. The Lions wish to thank Mike's of Food Basics who donated 30 baskets so we could keep things in order. While at the park we were sorry to hear it announced that someone had taken one of the large flags which was erected to help decorate the area for the Tractor Pull. Lake Scugog tea room. Mark the date Historical Society We had a large turnout Sunday for the Tribute Day at the Lake Scugog Museum grounds as we passed from place to place, spe- cial tribute was paid to items on the grounds in memory of a loved one whom is no longer with us. Also tribute to some founders whom are still here. As usual the coffee, tea, juice, sandwiches, tarts and cakes were very refreshing at the end of our tour. Next special event is the Scugog Festival of Herbs, Sunday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn all about herbs, herb products and crafts through vendors, lectures and workshops. There will be a delicious herbal luncheon served in the on your calendar now. Stan Binns Stan was quite busy last Thursday, July 2 as he greeted friends as they dropped in to congratu- late him on his 65th birthday. Many happy returns of the day Stan. Sincerely hope you'll enjoy better health. Rosie Soychuk We also had a much older person here in Caesarea celebrating her 100th birth- day on July 1. A big party was planned but suddenly John West, her son-in-law, had a fracture of the hip so the party was postponed for a couple of weeks. We wish John well on his recovery. Rosie was born in the Ukraine, July 1, 1898 and came to Toronto in 1924. She was married here in Canada and has one daughter, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. Her husband passed away in 1983. I can see it has been a great journey for Rosie down the road of life. Congratulations and may you have many more. Anyone with concerns are invited to attend. A "Berry" Social will be held this Saturday, July 11 starting at 7:30 p.m. in Utica Hall. Our pastoral charge along with Blackstock-Nestleton and Manchester-Scugog Island will present an evening of light refreshment and entertainment with proceeds going to Camp Scugog. Join together for an evening of berries and fellow- ship. If unable to attend perhaps some may like to buy a ticket as a donation. Church on Sunday, July 12 will be at Epsom starting at 9:30 a.m. with favorite hymns followed by worship service at 10 a.m. If weather permits, ser- vice will be held outside so bring a lawn chair and your favorite sun hat. Summer Camp at Utica Community Daycare begins this week for children ages six to nine. If you haven't enrolled your children, give the daycare a call at 985-8783 as the camp continues until Aug. 28. John, Suzanne and Lucas Warner spent a few days this past week in Cornwall where they visited with Suzanne's parents and in Ottawa visiting the Mint, a museum and watched the Canada Day fire- works at Parliament Hill. The second Tuesday of each month is when Utica Hall Board meet and this month it will be on July 14 starting at 8 p.m. Ruth Ashton received news of a new great-granddaughter born on June 28. Simplicity Utica & Elizabeth Joyce is the daughter of Bradley and Melissa Ashton of Cameron. The Federated Women's Institute of Ontario met at Loyalist College in Belleville on the weekend. Five members of the Bethesda-Reach branch and husbands attended the confer- ence. "Today's family shaping tomorrow's world" was the theme for the weekend. Excellent workshops were enjoyed, entertainment by the Mundell family of Warsaw was certainly enjoyed as well as speakers Maude Barlow, Chairperson of the Council of Canadians and Roy Bonisteel, journalist, author and T.V. host. The Evans family gathered recently to honor Leanne Evans with a bridal shower. She will be an August bride. Elden and Anita Evans and children visited Anita's family in Brockville. We hope they found Anita's mother recuper- ating well after major surgery recently. The 4-H program held their judging competition Thursday evening at Van Haven sales barn. Approximately 70 young people participated in this chal- lenging and educational event. Congratulations. Tanya Wilson has joined the Canadian Continental Christian Music Tour group for a month. She journeyed to Calgary on Friday last for rehearsal week. A week in Ireland will highlight the trip as well as their journey across Canada. Neil and Rose Evans hosted a mini Canada celebration. Rodney and Cathy Ashenhurst and boys joined the family. Visiting Bill and Eileen Mole are son Barry, Adelle and family from Whitehorse and Bill's sis- ter Beth from England. Visiting at the Sutcliffe home on Sunday were Terry and Eleanor Crawford, Helen Crawford of Greenbank, Jack and Margaret Miller of Mississauga, Dave and Doris Bray of Little Britain, Tom and Brenda Bray and girls and Jerry Gray of Raglan, Evelyn Bray of Port Perry, Kathy and Nelson Nicholson and son Tyson, Nelson's cousin Lawrence and Tyson's Godparents Rick and Corey.
