Dean Kelly, a 30-year resident of Coulcliff Blvd., says he expect- ed an eight-foot privacy fence was to be built along the perimet- er of the nine-hole golf course that's part of the retirement com- munity. He is disappeinted with the four-foot chain link"that's been installed. He and other neighbors say they're now in danger of errant golf balls, which land in their yards. "There are 15 properties adjoining to the golf course and you'd" think they'd put up something to stop the balls from hitting our homes; you'd think the golfers would want someth- ing up so they don't lose their balls," he said, holding up a small basket with over a dozen balls inside; they're balls he says have landed over the past week in his yard. "People are teeing off on the- ninth hole here and sending them right into our yards, and off our homes," said Mr. Kelly. "Those balls come screaming in here at over 100 miles per hour. They scare us when they hit trees or homes; it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt." Alex Connor, manager of the region's environmental health division, said tests last week at all the region's top swimming holes showed passing grades. But he doesn't think that will last throughout the summer. "They look fine so far. They (bacteria counts) are slowly increasing with the warm weath- er; the measurements are slowly 8dr Gl I AW Rr (0) WR " | NIM ©) - S00 BHBA7E1) REGUIRED rising and that's not good for swimmers," he said Thursday, after studying tests were done at 14 of Durham's beaches last Monday. "The hot weather this year will make for a problem," Mr. Connor predicted. "While colder weather kills bacteria, it can live longer in warmer temperatures, which makes for elevated E coli counts." When average counts at beaches read over 100, signs are posted warning people not to swim. Higher bacteria counts mean more organisms Please turn to page 10 [OVERRIDGE Fireplace Warehouse 180 Casimir St, %, 1960, 3 PORT PERRY i Co @05) ; Ndi * [3 985-0715 {| |;
