The Merchants first game was against the Pickering Heat. In the top of the third inning, Todd Smart singled to reach base. Outfielder, Damion McColloch then fol- lowed up with a base hit to give Port the lead 1-0. In the next inning, Pickering was able to put a couple back to back hits together to score two runs. The Heat's Brad Bricknell was able to keep the Merchant batters off stride all game with his deceiv- ing change up. The final score was 2-1 for Pickering. Port Perry then faced Colborne Rutherflo. Port's bats came alive in the second inning as Empringham, Vander Slagt, Smart, Stratford and Mark Goreski all contributed with hits. The Merchants were up 4-0. Colborne was able to score two runs on an error and a couple hits the next Inning. Mark Goreski was able to shut down the Rutherflo batters the rest of the game to give the Merchants a 4-2 win. The Merchants then had to face the powerful Scarborough Thunder. Mike Crawford took the mound for Scarborough, while the rookje Paul Stead started for the Merchants. There was no score and only a couple of hits in the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. John Stratford led off the inning with a single. Todd Smart moved Stratford to second with a base hit. After a pop up and a fielder's choice the Merchants had runners on the corners with two out. The pitcher Mark Goreski then hit a ball over second base to score Stratford and give Port Perry the lead 1-0. Scarborough was threatening in their last at bat. With the tying run in scoring position the Thunder hit a drive up the middle. The speedy short stop John Stratford made a spectacular play to cut the ball off and gun the runner out. This gave Port the 1-0 win. Paul Stead pitched a gem by only giving up two hits. Special mention to catcher Paul Goreski who called a great game behind the plate. In the quarter final game the Merchants faced the heavy hitting Elora Dixon Lumber Kings. In the third inning, Elora scored after a walk and a couple of Merchant errors. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning. Port pitcher Mark Goreski hit a triple to the fence. Steve Connors then tied the game by bringing Goreski home with a single. Rich Burkeholder then looped a ball over the infield to score Connors. The Merchants had the lead until the sixth inning. Elora rallied with four runs to go ahead 5-2. A Todd Smart home run was all the scoring Port Perry could muster as Elora beat the Merchants 5-3. The coaching staff was pleased with the squad's fine performance against top calibre teams.
