With temperatures above seasonal averages continuing in southern Ontario and steady rainfall each week, this looks to be a great year for most growers, said Joel Bagg of Port Perry's OMAFRA (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Farm, and Rural Affairs office) office. "Everything looks pretty good right now; the corn is getting quite high and it's tasseling early," he said, estimating most 1998 corn crops to be almost two weeks ahead of schedule. "It's grown quite fast; it's definitely ahead and quite early." Enjoying the early arrival of the corn season is Raglan's Manns family, who have been selling corn from their 47 acres for 22 years now. - "We began selling last Saturday (July 11) and thatisthe earliest we've ever been," said Edna Manns. "It's going to be a pretty good crop this year; I just hope it's not too hot because ~ Yi - od o » -- -- it's terrible picking," she said. Compared to last year, picking began around Aug. 1, this year 1s looking quite good, said Mrs. Manns. "They are kind of small, but all early corn has smaller cobs. We're definitely a couple of weeks ahead...We need a bit more rain and hopefully we'll run into the second week of September like we usually do." Also expecting to be selling some of his crop by the middle of this week is Rod McKay, co-owner of Willowtree Farms near Manchester. "We're hoping to have it for sale some- time next week, maybe by the middle," he said Friday. "We're at least a couple of weeks ahead, maybe even three. The corn looks pretty good." While Willowtree Farm corn went on sale on Aug. 20 last year, Mr. McKay says his crop will make an appearance at the dinner table a lot earlier this year. "This is the earliest ever we've had corn ready. It might have been around our knees at this time last year, and now it's eight or nine feet tall." A great growing season that's consisted of lots of sunshine and fairly frequent rains means the corn crop is coming earlier than ever this summer.
