Dave Robinson, a Port Perry High School teacher who repre- sents his colleagues on the Ontario Secondary School Teachers (OSSTF) local 13, said that while negotiations with the Durham District School Board will continue over the summer, the outlook right now is bleak. A strike in September is "most likely", he said last week. "We will not be reporting for work." Teachers here voted overwhelm- ingly in favor of a strike in June. Their contract expires at the end of August, and while talks on a new collective agreement are being held, a huge stumbling block has emerged. At issue is the time teachers spend in the classroom. Their cur- rent contract calls for them to teach six of eight classes each day; new provincial guidelines call for them to be in the classroom seven of eight each day. That's unacceptable to the teachers, who say they need the time away from the classroom to prepare for lessons, mark assign- ments and see to other responsibili- ties. And according to Mr. Robinson and other OSSTF officials, it could prove to be a deal breaker in Durham. "The six out of eight (classes) is not negotiable," said Mr. Robinson. He contends that better staffing levels would mean the extra class time for teachers here isn't neces- sary; he said Port Perry High Please turn to page 17 ; CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR 100 per cent more accurate than their predecessors and can pinpoint the exact distance and speed of as many targets as they wish. Raids net $1 million theft haul By Jeff Mitchel] Port Perry Star More than $1 million in stolen con- struction equipment was recovered in a massive police raid that included homes in Scugog Township Saturday morning. Officers with Durham Regional Police and the OPP acting together as part of a provincial auto theft team exe- cuted search warrants at a total of 19 properties, some of which were in Blackstock and Nestleton. Property recovered included heavy equipment such as backhoes, bobcats and trucks, and has been valued at $1.2 million, said Sgt. Randy Wiles of Durham Regional Police's intelligence bureau. Warrants were executed at. "13 places in (Durham) region, and six out- side the region," he said. Other proper- ties were in Janetville, Cameron, and Hastings, among other locations. Police are releasing few details relat- ing to the sweep, which was launched around 7:30 Saturday morning in Cartwright, east of Port Perry. The equipment has been taken to a compound in Barrie and is being pro- cessed by police. Statue of the Virgin Mary given new life By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Two men came bearing a special gift for Father Charles Faleiro last week when they presented the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church priest with a restored statuette of the Virgin Mary. After more than a month of cleaning, repairing and painting the icon after its near destruction in the May 31 church blaze, parishioner Bob Rogers and artist Paul Livingston have have given the statue a new life. "After the fire we waited a bit and then asked Father Charlie if he would like us to try and fix it for him, and he said sure," Mr. Rogers said last week during a pre- sentation ceremony atthe Port Perry church.
