Charities, environment can benefit Car recycling programs need boost Marking the sec- ond anniversary of its ReinCARnate Vehicle Recycling Program (RVRP), the Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) released fig- ures indicating that far more needs to be done to recover old and abandoned cars. "Since July, 1986 ReinCARnate has recovered more than 2,500 old cars for recycling and reuse, generating charitable proceeds of $240,000 to sup- port recycling edu- cation in Ontario" says Chris van Rossem, coordina- tor of the RVRP pro- gram. "W e estimate that our program has recovered approximately 2,436 tonnes of steel, cast iron and aluminum and about 49,660 litres of automobile oper- ating fluids (anti- freeze, oil, trans- mission fluid, etc.) that might other- wise have contami- nated local ground water. The problem, says Mr. van Rossem, is that despite the relative success of ReinCARnate, there are 275,000 cars that go unac- counted for each year in Ontario. This poses a sig- nificant environ- mental problem. Group LAL Port Perry & Prince Albert UNITED CHURCHES Prince Albert closed for "July and August BAHA'I "Rise unto that for which thou wast created." "Many people just aren't sure what to do with their old cars" says van Rossem. "So they just let them sit in drive- ways or farm fields until they start deteriorating." But if they cal. the ReinCARnate hotline at 1-888- CAR-DIED (416 . 960-1025 ext. 23 in the Toronto area' old car owners wil get a free tow, « charitable tax receipt and thc security of knowing their cars will be recycled in an envi- ronmentally appro- priate way. Ninety per cent of the cars recycled through the pro- gram are more thar 11-years-old. "There are still 2.5 million vehicles of this age on the road" says Mr. van Rossem.
